I'm thinking of starting the Large Cents Dansco Album #7099. I know it would be a real challenge, especially with the three 1793's. So I was wondering if anyone on here is working on or has completed this set. I would like to know how much it would cost net, what the keys are, etc.

So is anyone doing this set right now?

I'm not specifically doing the Dansco set but I do have most of a date set. I'm missing about five dates, all common, I could easily pick them up whenever I choose. If the Dansco has the 93 cap in it that is going to be the killer (Most people would think it would be the Chain, but the cap is MUCH tougher than the chain. I have three chains and a wreath but I don't have a cap.) In order of difficulty it's 93 cap, 93 chain, 1799, 1804, 93 wreath, 1839/6 (I think it has five openings for the heads of 39. If you don't want to duplicate any then the first would be the head of 36, the 39/6),1796 draped bust, 1809, 1811, 1813, 1857, and 1823. Everything else is pretty easy. Frankly the last five of those aren't too difficult. The early 40's coins are inexpensive, but can be tough to locate, I'm not sure why.

Then you can move on to the die varieties. Take my advice and do the middle dates. Much easier to attribute than the late dates, and much cheaper than the early dates.

Thanks conder, this is very useful info. Yeah, the dansco does include the 93 cap, there's two on ebay from 4000 to 6000 bucks. Way out of my price range for now. So are you using any books for reference?

I'm working on the large cent set. Realistically, I'll never get the complete set from 1793-1857 due to the high prices for the key dates, so I'm getting what I can. Here's a list I made up and there is an 'x' next to the ones in my collection so far. Most of the varieties are not included as there appears to be quite a few and just wanted to show you what I have.

Since I can't afford the finest, I buy on price and have gotten some good deals on ebay. Don't know where else to get them so that's pretty much my only option. Only started collecting them last January so maybe I've done alright.

This article lists what the author believes are the books that should be in your library if you are a large cent collector:

Not sure if anything new has come out since, but this list seems to be a good start.

Hey Hambone, nice! Yeah, I'm sort of working on early large cents. I don't have much past 1800, and what I have isn't all that nice, but I'm working on those holes.

I have a couple of dupes I've been thinking about selling on if you're interested. I simply love them! Pretty neat coins. =)

Yeah, large cents are pretty cool; especially the draped bust ones.

delaner: If you could hold on to em for a few weeks, I'll have a little money to spend;)

Hambone,
Not sure what your budget is but I have a few on my ecrater site.
Also, check out Tom Reynolds website. He has some of the finest Large Cents and Half Cents I have ever seen.

Oh my gosh! Tom's coins are sooo far out of my price range! To tell the truth, I have never seen so many large cents of that quality in one place.

My price range/allowance is like $40-$50 a month. I need to get a job now that I'm old enough.
