This is my lowest-grade half eagle, recently purchased for about 25% over spot. At first glance it appears cleaned but but there are minimal hairlines and I'm liking it more as I "get to know" the coin. The price for this scarce date escalates quickly in higher grades; this one looks like a low-end VF to me.

Comments and opinions, anyone?

First let me say - excellent catch! Mintage 31,000 and quite scarce in any grade. As for grade, I would go Fine-12, cleaned on that baby. Again, nice acquisition!

I think this coin is a solid F12 - not necessarily cleaned. The wear appears to be honest circulation to me. With the low mintage and the many counterfeits, you may want to consider getting this coin graded by ANACS (if cleaned) or PCGS. It may come back as an F15. Very nice find!

It's very, very similar in wear pattern/degree to an ANACS F15, and better than a PCGS F12, which I visually cherrypicked over at Heritage for comparison. IMO the market says F15 for this coin, which is about right if Susan says F12.

The ANACS coin went for $532 last May, by the way.

F-15 on this one real close to a VF20

Definitely cleaned. A little tough to grade to do poor strike. I could go with Fine plus.

ANACS VF20, and I believe it'll slab righteously.
Rest in Peace

Dave, I have serious doubts that would happen and if it did, it's basically a problem in the holder. The coin has signs of cleaning all over the obverse.

ANACS did not give it a pass on the cleaning. The color is really nice IMO but I guess the hairlines are just too obvious. VF-20 details cleaned:
