I just bought a 1906 RD IHC on ebay and I'm worried that it might be a counterfeit. The reverse looks a little strange, the shape of the letters looks a little off to me. On the other hand it could just be my imagination. Has anyone heard of sales of common date IHC counterfeits before? Here is a link to the coin: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...ht_500wt_922

I believe it's genuine. The color is suspect, there's either a light trace of wear or it's a lightly struck coin. A lot of IHCs on e-Bay described as "red" are either recolored or whizzed. Still, at $30., it's not a bad buy. A seller with a "no returns policy" and states that he/she is not a "collector" should raise red flags.

Delaner, how did you ID it as a fake? So far I have genuine: 1, fake: 1 :)

I am not an expert on counterfeit IHC, but I have to agree with Delaner, the coin looks suspect. In particular is the '0' in the date. The inside of the '0' looks flat at the upper and lower end. It should be more tapered. When compared to other IHC the '0' is suspect IMO.

Beagle, something similar caused me to post in the first place. It looks like the inside of the 'C' on the word cent on the reverse iis flat.

symphonic I see what you are saying. I'm not 100% sure that I am correct, but I looked at Snow's attribution guide for 1906 and all the examples had the more tapered '0'. I'm glad that you posted this coin, because I collect IHC and whether I am right or wrong any info I can get on counterfeits is beneficial to me.

Tupical silly statements of I'm not a collector. Then why did they buy those coins in the first place. NO RETURNS? Gee I wonder why? Only missed saying UNSEARCHED. Quote:Posted Yesterday 11:45 pm I just bought a 1906 RD IHC on ebay and I'm worried that it might be a counterfeit. I guess it may be real since not many counterfeiters would spend the time on a coin worth that little. But it does happen. Regardless, since you bought it and no returns, just be happy with it.

Just a theoretical question. Even if it says no returns, couldn't you open a dispute if the item was not as described? If it is called a 1906 IHC and you get it checked and it turns out to be a dud. For the record, I have no clue if it is real or not. I thought it looked cleaned or recolored. But I am new at this and haven't even looked at collecting IHC yet.

it looks real to me but it has that whizzed wiped look. also it looks like there is a few rim bumps/nicks. I have a nice red 1905 for refrence and I'm no expert.

I'm looking at the reverse "one cent" and I see blobs on the letters like it was cast from bad dies. I'm tending towards fake. If the maker sells the fake for only $1 each, he's still making a huge profit. What's more he depends on people not thinking something so inexpensive will be faked.

@IP08S There are a few rim nicks. But at $30, I was willing to live with a nick.
@allranger Yes, if if it turns out to be a fake, it doesn't matter that it says no returns. The item was misrepresented and if the seller won't refund, paypal will.
@justcarl If it is a fake, I have some action I can take, "no returns" or not. This is why I was willing to take a low cost risk.
Thank you everyone for your help so far!

imo the coin is real, but it was cleaned, the luster looks off to me.
it was probably whizzed and then artificially colored.

I have been looking at this coin every once in a while since this morning, and I believe it is real, hopefully some of the other Indian head collectors will chime in.

The fields look grainy to me. All of the devices are uneven, yet it's red. The luster is wrong. I suppose it's possible it's not a counterfeit, but I wouldn't take a risk on it. If it's real, it's a $3 coin that has been unfortunately disguised.
Maybe this is what a coin looks like after an acid bath...

Update: I brought the coin to a trusted dealer to examine. He says that it's genuine, but doctored. The color is wrong, there is a gash along the face, and the aforementioned nick along the bottom. He gave it a grade of 3. I'm tempted to send it off to PCGS to get an official ruling one way or the other... :)
