My wife called me and said she found a new door for our basement at a yard sale today so I head on out on a 50 mile round trip to go buy the door for twenty bucks. Well, the door will do OK but I had to wait for awhile for this truck to move so I could load up. I walked around and found a few odds and ends and then I look down at the stacks of the usual National Geographic and "How to fix it" books in these boxes under the table and this jumps out at me. It is a bit more yellowed than this picture shows but it is not bug eaten, stinky, torn, creased or missing anything. No stains, just honest age. Yes, I asked the lady if she had any other books about coins or anything that has to do with them. She said she left a black book from 1979 at home. 1943 Buying Price Guide Catalogue of United States Coins from the American Rare Coin Co. in Chicago. This is not a reprint. I think it's so cool and you would not believe the prices for coins. On the cover they say $750.00 to $2,000.00 paid for this Silver Dollar and it is a picture of the King of All US coins, The 1804 Silver DollarThat might just cost a tad more than that these days. I won't say what I paid but it wasn't much, but it certainly was in line with the 1943 prices.

If you only knew,The 1916 D dime could be had for a dollar in Uncirculated condition. The 1916 Standing Liberty quarter a mere $2.00. If you like CC Twenty Cent Pieces you could have gotten circulated at FACE VALUE! $0.20! Want a 3 legged Buffalo in UNC? Fork over .35 cents buddy boy. A couple others you don't see are 1909 S VDB is $2.00 1914 D is a buck and the 1922 Plain is $5.00 in UNC.

Thanks Wheezy! My Whitman album from around 1955 has a handwritten note that the 1916D Mercury was worth $115 (I was 10 years old) so that was beyond my budget!

I think I would go back and pick up an uncirculated 1796 quarter for $6 and a few uncirculated 1901-S quarters for $1 each.
I wonder if it was an accurate price guide for the times.

Quote: " If you only knew,The 1916 D dime could be had for a dollar in Uncirculated condition." This book is a buying guide, not a retail price list. It is analogous to today's full-page newspaper ads from companies that setup in hotels to buy coins and gold for profit. No doubt they were making plenty of that at those prices, even sixty or so years ago. I actually remember those exact same books from my coin collecting days in the 1950's but I never saved any of them.

That price guide is in great shape for '43! So I wonder...what's an 1856 FE priced at--$5? That one always makes me
