How much desiccant is enough? I have a 1.5 pound metal container of "Davison Refrigeration Grade Silica Gel PA 100" that was given to me by my grandfather (who was into refrigeration).

I would like to know what kind of formula a person would use o calculate this. Since hunidity is different all over, I know the answer is a variable. However, I live in a very humid place so I figure maximum amount is the best way to go.

Also, what is desiccant normally contained in once it is in your coin box/safe?

Any help appreciated.

Sounds like the desiccant is old, you will probably have to recharge it with an oven bake. There is no hard and fast "formula". You need just enough to handle the job at hand. Obviously, you'll need to put it into something that water and permeate, like a burlap bag. Also, you'll have to put the coins/desiccant into a heavy plastic bag or it will simply saturate too quickly and become useless.
