Better to ask than to stay dumb.

Federal Reserve Notes: For "Series" of certain years (e.g.1928), does that mean that all of the bills were printed during that one year, or were they evenly spread out throughout the years? And in order of reserve banks A-L, or via some other method?

Thanks.

IIRC the series is simply when that design was produced. Changes in signatures or location of elements of the design will result in a new series

Thanks, that makes sense. So what about the printing process and the 12 banks? Aren't they all printed in Washington DC? Are the 12 banks actually relevant as they were with Federal Reserve Bank Notes, or are they now simply representative of the area in which they are distributed?

I hope I'm not answering my own questions here, I'd just like to affirm my general understanding.

Notes are printed in two places for the various Federal Reserve Banks, Washington DC and Fort Worth Texas.

Now a days distribution takes place wherever currency is needed regardless of fed district.

Meaning a NY fed district note can be distributed in Texas if the need is in TX and vice versa.

When ever I have seen notes being distributed from the wrong district I always assumed it was the banks that were mixing it up rather than the Fed.

The Banks get it from the courier, who gets it from the regional fed storage / vault. So it is the courier that mixes it up.

I understand there is no "alphabetic" order to the printing, merely printing by demand for the districts as needed.

Also, even though it's not as commonplace as before {with the electronic transfers now}, people still want cash money. If a district area gets a run on the actual bills, they can and do buy bills from other districts to replenish or satisfy demand.

Finally, for single bills, think general commerce usage, someone in TX, e.g., vacations in CA, spends say an Atlanta $100 bill there, simple commerce flow.

A good reference is the Black Bokk of United States Paper Money, around $8. Wealth of info., if you want to delve into it.
