This is just sad, that there would be people willing to pay $100 or more for this lot of junk, thinking they are getting a treasure. As bad as the picture is, the "1877" is a crude obvious counterfeit. I laughed when I saw it. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...t_1307wt_170

I reported this auction. Bidders ought to look more closely, but if we can spare them the loss....

$150.17 :(
96% feedback. Out of U.S., no way!
The diagnostics are all wrong and, the reverse N's are obliterated as to not recognize a key diagnostic of the series.

Certainly a highly suspect coin. Bad color, reverse messed up, bad picture of obverse. Not saying I would bid on a lot like this, but how can you be sure it's counterfeit? Probable if it smells bad, looks bad - is bad Again I agree with you, just wondering if I'm missing something more obvious?

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here, but just looking at the "1877" on the coin alone would raise a red flag with me. The arrangement of the numerals just doesn't look right.

I agree that it's a definite counterfeit. The reverse is obliterated, so it doesn't show much....but the obverse is all off. The portrait of liberty looks wrong, the motto font and layout looks off, the date looks off. It looks to me like it was made from a home-made die...it kind of reminds me of those big 1877 reproduction coffee coasters.

Quote: how can you be sure it's counterfeit? Despite the condition of the other 8 IHCs, a bidder should be able to compare and see that something is very wrong with the feathers, etc. I think the seller grouped this fake with badly worn/damaged authentic IHCs intentionally--to lower buyer expectations and keep scrutiny off the fake--but I'm suspicious that way.

At least returns are accepted. maybe the seller really doesn't think its fake.

Perhaps--but they know enough about 1877 to recognize a key date. It only takes a few minutes research on the internet to dismiss this as fake.

Did you notice the reason given for the one negative feedback he received? "It's a fake !!"

I don't buy anything on ebay outside the U.S. This guy is obviously a scamster.

I agree that has to be one of the worst fakes. Someone is gonna be disappointed to hear the bad news. That coin sort of reminds me of the plastic play money coins that you can buy in the toy section.

Now bid up to $222. Someone is going to be sorry. Obvious fake.

You have got to be kidding me :o If you are going to collect a certain series, learn everything you can about it before diving in and buying! You wouldn't start buying Tiffany lamps without knowing how to spot fakes.
