I might regret it but...there is a 30 return policy and it's in a Redfield holder MS65....Just have to wait til it gets here. NGC/Numismedia both put it at $1050. Keep thinking about "if it's too good to be true"...

There are two primary Paramount Redfield holders- black for MS60 and red for MS65. Remember that these coins were holdered in the late 1970s so the grading is not precise as it would be today. The grades are usually close but I have seen 63s in the black holders and I have seen 63s in the red holders as well. The seller had it priced close to the MS64 level so that should be an indicator of what the seller thought of the coin. The coin looks pretty clean but the photos have a bit of blur so I personally would not make a call for either 64 or 65 but I am fairly certain that it will land on one of those two grades.

I should also mention that there are non-Redfield Paramount holders too so be careful when looking for a coin that once resided in LaVere's basement next to the peaches

I think it is a great place to put your money. The history that goes with those coins is truly an American folk story. I'm going to get one when the right coin and holder hit me on the right day. That is a coin I would jump all over. You can't go wrong. If you get it in hand and don't like it I'll give you $20 more than you paid for it. There. It's a sure thing!

Thanks biokemist6 for that info. I remember reading a thread on CCF at one point talking about the different Redfield holders. If I remember correctly there was a green one mentioned which was supposed to be for the super high quality Morgans. Few and far between. I'll keep that offer in mind junior e but hopefully I won't be disappointed.

Your biggest problem is deciding whether or not to remove it from the holder. The top of the cheek, right under the eye, will decide. Unless you think it's a slam dunk at 65 (I can't wait for your pics), leave it in the Redfield holder. That has a cachet all its' own.

You ain't losing a thing on this purchase, thank you very much.

Wow. Great find.

Don't think I could break it out of that holder though.

Thanks for the feedback and no, don't plan taking it out of the holder. As SD says it has its own cachet/history. Will post a pic when she arrives.

Well, that's the thing. If it doesn't make 65, you leave it in the Redfield holder and make your money back that way. If it does make 65, you immediately quadruple your money by cracking it.

That's what I love about this place, I learn something new every day. I'd never heard of the Redfield collection before.

Don't quite get that one SD. Wouldn't it carry a higher premium if left in the Redfield?

Not at 65, it won't. 1890-S jumps in value bigtime between 64-65, a jump which makes knowledgeable collectors want to see the respected TPG plastic rather than Paramount. Would you have bid this coin to 65 prices based on the pics shown?

Would you have considered it more seriously if it were in PCGS plastic?

OK I see what you're saying about the other collectors wanting that TPG slab. But honestly speaking just for myself, I'm not sure I would have bid on it in a normal slab. I was really interested more in that Redfield holder with a NICE coin inside. Actually I'd just joined ANA with a mind to having NGC grade it (along with my other Redfield) as I found out NGC will keep it in the orig. holder.

On the other hand, looks like you may be right. Here's the same coin/mint/seller with a Redfield slabbed by PCGS going for a goooodly amount more AND it's a grade lower.

Now that's just silly. It's a $200 coin in MS64. The "Redfield" cachet is an interesting sideline, not a 3x multiplier of value. Redfield was a hoard, not a collection. And, at over 400,000 coins, not a small one.

Eliasberg is a provenance I'd pay for. Redfield, not so much.

Here she is right outta the chute. Think it makes 65? I'd put it at a 64+.

I like the toning! The coin does look like a 64 or a 64+ but I doubt that it would make 65. Just a little too much chatter in the fields and the cheek.
