I see what appears to be separation lines, but do not see much in the way of spread. I am leaning towards die attrition, but cannot vote as I wanted to see what others said first(cheating)

U'mm,
1st pic. : Looks like an E to me with 3 arrows
approaching from the east. Seems to be 3 direct hits.
2nd pic.: Multiple numeral assasinations. Most likely a drive by shooting by a crazy indian
Rest in Peace

OK, I'll start it. I think it is light Machine Doubling but I am really not positive. It looks to me like the doubling in the E is changing the thickness of the letter.

Looks like my vote is in the majority; we got lucky, or a classic (and well-photographed!) example of Machine Doubling (I always called it chatter).

It's a 1963 cent, over analysed.

I'm not sure and I'll tell ya why.

Might be die attrition due to MAD as the 2nd photo appears to show evidence of the wear by rubbing on the die on the rim through a MAD, although it has not reached the devises. I think this sometimes results in doubling?

I'm probably wrong, but just a guess.

Coop, I have this thing as a Proof Cent first off. As proof coins are struck 2 to 3 times depending on the base metal I am sure it was hit more than once.

From what I can see it looks like a true doubled Proof die.
If it is a proof!

I'm way new to this, but since coop is asking this I'm assuming this is a test for all so I will try. My pics suck compaired to his and yes I am jealous, sigh....one day I'll be there. I've seen this on a few 63's since I have been looking, so I am assuming Machine Doubling. Die Attrition is a term I have never heard but sounds like something that may be due to Die Deterioration of some sort so possibly. I can't wait to hear the answer though. the 60's pennies always make there way to my double check pile and I always feel like I am letting something go when I send them to the bank change graveyard.

I vote PMD...in my amature opinion its not Doubling because the lines are not on the same vertical plane...they would be in the same parts (i.e....lower on each arm of the E) The Date kinda has me stumped...Die Movement?

I voted for variety. It doesn't have the inconsistent, blobby, rough appearance of Die Deterioration. The die also looks to be in nice shape. It also doesn't have the flat, shelf-like appearance of Machine Doubling or a double-strike. There are separation lines at the tops of the letters, not near the edges, where Machine Doubling is normally seen.

Moderate separation lines on the E and light separation lines south of 196 looks like a variety to me---just a guess.
