Went to the bank to get a few boxes of coins to sort through on the weekend, and while the teller was going back and getting a box (Ended up being a mint box of 50 new rolls of 2011Ds) I noticed in her change tray several silver dimes & quarters. I asked her if I could buy them off her , her answer was 'absolutely not'. It's a bit upsetting to me as I've been a customer at this bank for 15+ years, and done a ton of business.
I'm sure it's not something I should get upset over, but I am upset and will be closing my account on monday.

OK thats a bit harsh even if they are silver. She should have just been like no, sorry! or something, from the tone you make it sound like she was mad at you for even asking.

Yes, that was her tone with me, I sort of got the feeling that I was asking for her firstborn. At this bank I've got a FEW wheats, one Buffalo nickel and maybe one or two silver dimes. Every time I've asked for them them the tellers always said something like 'Oh darn, I was hoping to get through the day without someone seeing it , at least I know you're going to take care of it.' type of statement. So, on top of other things I think I'm going to go with the local credit union or similar. Also the rolls were 2011p and not 2011d

what she said was a bit harsh, but I think your posted reaction is more harsh.

She was probably just mad about something else or had a bad day. Tellers like that should really leave their attitude out of the workplace.

WOW! Sometimes I'm shocked at how people on this forum are treated by their respective banks.
My bank tellers would NEVER treat someone like that. Whatever happened to customer service?
Anyhow, I think your posted reaction wasn't even mildly harsh. Find a new bank.

I would have asked for a manager and explained that you are a coin collector and would like those coins.
That should be the end of it.

Some of my local bank tellers search for silver themselves, so when you ask they also say no. I just end up ordering a box, then they don't have time to search through them.

Maybe she knew they were silver and was going to "buy" them when she closed out her drawer. She definitely doesn't have people skills.

If she was going to buy them she should have done it right away and not left them sitting out in the open. I had about the same situation with pennies at my bank. Now I just use that bank as my dump

yeah I think she had no right to say that. Those coins belong to the bank, and as a customer you have the right to buy them. if she wanted them because she knows they are silver, she should have bought them and put them under the counter or something so no one could see them. those were fair game, and I'm sure if you brought the manager into it they would be yours. I too think she was just having a bad day and you caught her at the wrong time.

I don't think you can "buy" coins from a bank. The bank is not a retail outlet. What you should have been able to do was simply to have given her the same amount in face value from your pocket.
As far as the bank is concerned, silver dimes are worth 10 cents and silver quarters are worth 25 cents.

JPsned - That's what I asked to do , to get my change back from several checks I was cashing , and I wanted the quarter & dime to be part of the change. There was some sort of painted quarter in the tray and she said 'Well , you can have this one if you want'. So she knew the value , kept them out in the tray but wouldn't let me get them.

so all of you that is saying this teller was wrong, if you were the teller you would let the customer have them even though you wanted them yourself? Banks get busy at times and just because the teller didn't get them out of the drawer as soon as they came in doesn't mean she wasn't going to do so when she got a chance. Just because you are a customer doesn't mean you have the right to things just because you want them. If the teller doesn't want them or doesn't know what they are then I am sure they would have no problem but I am sure if you put yourself in the tellers place you would see this differently

At many banks the tellers collect silver and odd coins. They have to wait till the end of their shift where I work and then have a mgr witness them buying the coins out of their cash box. She does not have to give them to a customer and she does not have to let you sort through her coin trays...but... she could use some nicer people skills or you need to grow some thicker skin. I, for one, believe she probably said "absolutely not" in a positive non abusive manner that was conveying to you that she knew what they were and they were not available. You may have, after already mentally calculated the profit windfall you thought you were going to reap, been taken aback but I doubt the intention was abuse. When I had a coin drawer years ago I often told customers "I don't think so" when they asked for the coins I had set aside in the "odd coin slot" that I intended to buy for myself. Some just smiled, some laughed and some got angry...but none of them got the coins.
