Hello, I bought this Morgan a year ago, I just noticed it was a fake. I contacted the seller and he said just give him what I paid for it and he would refund the money, plus shipping. My question is, silver was at 18.50 I paid $37 for a CBU 1900 O real Morgan. Now with silver being double what it was when I bought the coin. Shouldn't I receive a little more than the original $37, Or should I just be thankful he's still willing to refund the money. And this was actually the replacement Morgan for the 1st fake he sent me. I picked up on that one right away and sent it back. I didn't realize this was a fake also until I just had them out along side each other. Then when I tested it, It failed. (Acid) Should I go for strike three and ask for yet another replacement, this way I don't loose the investment. I know I messed up not picking up on it sooner.

Wow two fakes in a row what a jerk.
I'd get your money back ASAP and worry about getting the morgan you want from someone else and NEVER doing business with this seller again.

NO.

You should be ecstatic that he's willing to refund the money. You should have checked to see if it was fake a year ago. (Well, you should have checked better, I suppose).

Sorry you lost your investment, and it sucks that you bought from a seller of fakes, but I don't think much can (should) be done about it.

Sorry!

Man, that's a pretty nice fake for the untrained eye. And I wouldn't expect them to fake a common date. Thanks for sharing your experience! Look at it this way: at least you didn't buy a roll!

Perhaps you could post the seller's id in the "Who not to do business with" thread... Sheesh! Sorry for the pain in the neck he was to you, NOT cool!

Why did you acid test it instead of weighing the coin? Acid testing coins should be a last resort after all other tests are done because it is a destructive test. I am certainly not a Morgan expert but that coin looks ok to me and there is even a nice clash on the reverse, something I have never seen on an Asian knockoff.

I think I would demand a real CBU 1900 O Morgan, or my $37 back.

Biokemist6 I took the measurements, but being they were so close, I decided to use the Silver Testing Solution. I accounted for the other metals that make up the Morgan. I thought that the 90 percent silver wouldn't be eaten up so quickly or at all for that matter.
Weight 27g Width 37.81mm
CenTec 93543 Readable.1g Scale
General Ultra Tec NO1433 Digital Caliper
Only after taking these measurements I decided to test further.
I used JSP Silver Testing Solution #GT41 & Ceramic Stone
Now I'm back to square one, I just tried testing a 90 percent Kennedy, that also was eaten right up. So ?
The silver half dollar gives a higher pitched ring when dropped on the desk, then the Morgan. I have to get out another morgan and try comparing them. But first a trip to the Docs. Thank you all for your help.
What sets me off ?ing this Morgan is the date so close to the rim and the lettering seems pressed down from the top.
Are the measurements within reason.
I didn't post the sellers name yet just in case I did make a mistake.

A thinner coin(half dollar) will ring with a higher pitch than a thicker coin(silver dollar).

There are 6 date positions for 1900-O Morgans

Generally an acid test requires depositing a small amount on a stone and testing. This process will damage the coin and reduce its value if it does turn out to be real.
Does the seller know you have acid tested the coin?
After a year I think you are extremely lucky the seller is even offering a refund.

You should of gotten your refund after the first fake and moved on instead of a replacement.
Rest in Peace

Let me understand. Without you posting the seller and letting us look at his other stuff, I see:

Seller ships a fake. OK, bunglefit of the doubt. Seller replaces, with another fake.

Buyer waits far past a return policy, then asks if he should give a third chance to a seller who has proven twice to be either incompetent or crooked.

Unless buyer plans on pursuing postal fraud or counterfooting charges, returning the fake only digs the hole deeper. Possible outcomes, best to wurst:

  • Here's a real coin.
  • Here's another fake.
  • Thanks for returning the evidence.
  • Returned coin? What returned coin?

I'd keep the coin, either for law enforcement or educational porpoises.

More money back?

Skip the part where that sounds like extortion.

If the value dropped 50% would you expect a 50% refund on a real one?

So where do your measurements leave me with this Morgan?https://goccf.com/t/94220#94220

I never think of coins in terms of their bullion value.

That's like ranking baseball players based on their salaries. It takes all the fun out of it.

Is it possible that the seller honestly doesn't know he's selling fakes?

Its great to have all the feedback. Most of you are right, Its been a year. And I should of walked away after the first fake. But I didn't. I got sucked in for yet another, and regardless if silver went up. The fact I failed to return it within the allotted time, Waived any legal action. I'm lucky hes moral. Its stupid of me to expect anything more than what I paid. I doubt he would say I'm only refunding you about half what you paid cause silver dropped. And if that was a real coin its all it'd be worth now. I'm lucky he's willing to accept a return after a year has gone bye. I mean really, who would do that. Its a good thing I've had a full year to learn about ways to prevent things like this. Once again my fault for being new and Nieveh.
BiggFredd I like the way you think! Jpsned You cornfused me with that first part. As for him not knowing, Anything is possible he's been selling Morgans sense 99, And he does have a 99 percent feedback score. When I checked his feedback last year a lady said 1st coin fake, 2nd a keeper TY.
calinka The weight and measurement seems to me to be within tolerance.
On a similar note When I take a sample from the edge of a coin you can barely make it out. You wouldn't know if it were bag mark or what. Your taking less then a 8th a pc of hair. Unless magnified your not going to pick up on it. And yes he's I feel my actions were just, I really wasn't looking for the refund
I'm taking a few more pics I'll post them in a couple. Thanks everyone! Enjoying the feedback
