This is a 1926 Buffalo nickel. The seller said it's a 1926-S, but I don't see a mintmark. Can anyone else see? This is the largest photo I can scan. link: http://imageshack.us/photo/my-image...img263c.jpg/It looks more like a blotch in the coin. It's been acid dated. I checked it with a loupe under bright light and can make something out, but it doesn't seem like an "S". If there's a mintmark there it almost looks like a D. Thanks. Ken

Yeah, looks more like a "D" to me, if anything.

Um, . Anything I see there which might resemble a "mint mark" is too far left and far too small to be a San Francisco mint mark. That should take up most of the field, and the upper serif should almost touch the "C."

Where are you seeing anything? I'd say its a Philly coin.

Most likely a D, possibly Philadephia, almost certainly not S. For a coin like this it almost doesn't matter. Retail for the 1926-S in G-4 is about $20. An acid-etched coin with uncertain mint isn't worth a whole lot more than face value IMO. Why not search out a no-problem 1926-S to purchase? If you buy this one I'll bet every time you look at it you will be wishing you had paid a bit more for a better one.

Well... thanks people. I'm 99.99% sure it's not an S. If it were, it would be "THE" rare one. It didn't cost me anything so I'm not out anything.

Looks like an S about the same as the toast looks like the virgin Mary. I can't stretch it into a D at all.

This is acid dated correct? I'm bad at this type of thing, but I think that's because I'm not into them. Coins like this (like biggfredd said) can play tricks on your eyes. I could almost argue it's a Q mint, but that would just be trying to make a point.
Also as noted, you'd be better off buying a G4 no-problem. It would be worth the extra few dollars.

You're right. I'll pick up a G4 and will be happy with it. However finding one for around $20 may be difficult as Jaobler mentioned.
Thanks for your responses.

You could probably sell this for a few bucks to put towards the other one that you're interested in. You are not the only one to claim to see a D for the mint mark. And if I'm not mistaken, a G4 26-d would still be worth $8-$10. I don't know how much acid dating takes away from the value, but I feel like this coin has to be worth something.

The the funny thing is before I started collecting buffalos I didn't really care for them. After I started getting several I found I really like the series. Now that I'm nearing completing the series I'm totally addicted. I look at my collection often and scour ebay and the coin shops in different towns looking for the missing ones. Once you start, you're hooked.
