My condolences to you, Mitch. I have just started this great hobby and hope to find a coin buddy as wonderful as your friend Mike.
And I also can't help but notice that Ron Paul quotation. Are you, by any chance, a libertarian of sorts?

I feel sad after reading this thread. It seems like I also lost a friend just by reading it. I always have a soft spot for guys who would always have the time for the little kids which in this case your little old daughter...
Please allow me to extend my deepest sympathy and condolences to your loss Mitch.

I knew Mike for many many years. Even though he was rough around the edges, it was a show. Any deals we ever had always included a few giggles. Last saw him at the Sequim WA stamp and coin show in June and bought a real nice 1812 Half. God speed my old numismatic friend you will be remembered fondly! Condolences to Mikes Family. Jack N.

Sounded like a very neat guy. I am sorry for your loss. In May, I emailed my friend and error dealer, Al of Al's Coins, who I have been dealing with at many Southern California shows for years. I asked him a question about the approximate value of an error coin. A day later, his wife answered my email stating that Al lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. I had no idea he was ill! It hit me like a ton of bricks. I know exactly what kind of pain you are going through. Hang in there.

With so few local coin shops out there anymore, and fewer good ones, it is always sad to hear about something like this. My condolences to you and those that knew him.

Many of my friends are "gruff." My other friends don't understand why I hang with them. I tell them because I see past the exterior and into their good hearts.
The O.P.'s story should remind us all to be a bit more receptive to folks who are different than we are.
R.I.P. Mike. And peace to the O.P., also.

Hi Mitch,
I'm sorry to be so late in seeing this. I was getting ready for my once in six months (or so) visits in to see Mike and I called ahead to be sure that he was in. The last time I was there, Mike wasn't in and I was just told that he was out buying some silver. I guess the wounds were too fresh for Dick to tell me what happened. Anyway, I just found out from Dick that Mike had passed away in August. Mike had taken a fall last year and after that he seemed a little weaker on some ways.
I liked Mike! As mentioned, he had a gruff exterior at first but once he got to know you and you got to know him a little bit, his exterior began to soften a little :-) The last time I was in, he gave me a good deal on a bunch of supplies. He was like that!
I liked to watch him work with other customers. I've always seen him as being very fair, honest and educated on his subjects. I would occasionally see him at shows in Tacoma and I was always glad to see him.
I am so sorry for his loss.
Bill

Sounds like a rough diamond. Can be hard but nevertheless, a guy whom which you could form a treasured friendship.
I know.
I can empathise.
My dad was like that.

I hear a new guy bought Mike's shop. Anyone know about him? I knew Mike for years and he is greatly missed by the coin community, especially his knowledge of tokens.

You were lucky to have him as a friend.
Your greatest gift to him will be to pass his passion to your daughter and to share your memories of him with us and her.

Mitch, Thanks for your post. I didn't ever meet Mike and am sorry for that. He sounds like a decent man. Sorry for your loss. You made me appreciate my "coin guys" in a new light.
Searun, I just stopped by yesterday. The new person is there on Tuesday through Saturday so I did not get to meet him.
