Hello,
I received my 5 ounce quarter last week. It is the Grand Canyon variety.
I have read that there are only 27,000 of these coins, each variety has 27,000 coins minted.
With that low mintage, I am considering sending it off to be certified.
I am not having it certified to resell the coin, I want it for my collection.
I have spoken to a local dealer who will send it off for me, but he was not too positive on certifying the coin. He stated that he has seen these coins sitting at shows, without much interest from the public.
I don't think I'm making a mistake, but I would like to hear from others that are collecting these quarters.
What do you think?
Thank you.

First ... to the CCF.

I say follow you own needs and send off if you feel that is necessary.

I say how much is it now to have dealer submit the coin you ask for TPG service for a coin like that size?

Thanks!

Welcome to CC!

I would not certify the coin. The dealers I've talked to consider them bullion pretty much. Now that the hype has died down, there's not been a ton of interest from collectors.....just my opinion.

I say send it out! Your not having it slabbed for resale but for your own likes. I would make sure it grades at least within top 3 tiers. (68-70) Personally I'd only send mine out if I was sure they would fall in the 69-70 range. The additional fees are pretty costly. That brings up the question, is their enough interest, I had the intentions to say, Theirs enough attention for each release to of sold out, But when I just checked. Grand Canyon is still available, along with Mt Hood. Say they don't sell out, I'm sure they would reduce the minting numbers on any future release. Creating a buzz that brings a lot more attention. Either way IMO, their time has yet to come. At some point their going to become highly desired.

I assume you are referring to the P mint marked coin from the Mint. The only way submitting is worth it is if it comes back a perfect SP70. Otherwise it will probably be a waste of cash (First Strike/Early Release is almost done on the GC (I believe it is 8/8)

If you are referring to the Bullion version then it is probably not worth submitting at all and makes more sense just to buy a graded specimen.

I am not sending mine in. I feel the reason the interest is not there is b.c the average person wants a set but can't spend 1300 plus a year on them. A lot of people have become lurkers over the last year with times being tuffer for some. Iam buying them b.c I like them not b.c of anything else. I got over buying a lot of the mints trash like I use to and buying what I like along time ago. Its always nice for you to buy something and it be worth more but if its not no biggie. There are several deals I have came across in the last few months that I could make 1000 plus on right now but I'm not selling b.c I like the product more than the money. Ok ill stop now

How about if it is a Light Finish variety? Worth it to have graded even if it comes back less than SP70?

Jury is still out on those....but I would lean towards grading if just to confirm the different finish
