I am new to coin collecting and I was looking at my old box of coins from years ago. I came across some Mercury dimes and started looking up the values. It turned out that I had a 1916-D, which seems to be selling at high prices. I read that this is a key date because there were only around 200,000 made. The detail on my coin seems pretty good but there is some kind of "burn" mark on the corner. Can anyone tell if what this coin might be graded at or what the value might be? Thank you for your help.

Without the damage I would say thats a VG, which would be a 1500 dollar coin. With that sevre damage, I would drop it to an AG. That puts a value of 700, but likely you could get 500.

While I see this coin as having VG10 details, it's not just a matter of dropping the grade for the damage. I think this coin was a piece of jewelry once and that the loop was cut off which caused the damage. This coin may only be worth a couple hundred dollars if it's real. Keep in mind that there are a lot of counterfeits out there and that may be why it was made into jewelry in the first place.
I am not proficient enough in this series to make an opinion as to its authenticity, but if it were real, I would only pay $100 or so to fill a hole because of the damage.

Not sure if I think it was jewelry at one time. Only the edge is cut off, doesn't seem like enough distance for a hole to have been. Also, the coin wouldn't have been centered very well. From coin jewelry I have seen, they were more centered. Not sure what happened. Maybe some kid in the 1920's was messing around with this coin, which was probably worth face value in that day. It just so happened to be a key date. Or it could be a fake, damaged on purpose to easily bring in a $100 bid. Either way, it is not worth it's full value due to the damage, but I'm sure a collector may pay $100 or maybe a little more, to fill the whole for cheap.

I definitely agree with Susanlynn9 that this was modified to be a piece of jewelry by having a silver loop soldered on and then removed. Murrellington, a hole wasn't put in the coin, a loop was added then removed.
To me it would have very little value. Sometimes its best to leave the hole empty.

VG8 Damaged I'd say, you could get maybe a hundred bucks or so off of it.

Awe, thanks for explaining KK! I pictured there not being enough room for a hole. I never thought about a loop being soldered on. So I can agree here. because I do see left over solder on the coin.

Thank you all for your input. I brought this coin to a coin dealer this morning. They said that I should send the coin to ANACS to get it authenticated. They said that even in the worst condition, the coin would sell for $250. They said if it was authenticated, come back and they would buy it from me.

I was just about to input that you need to authenticate. VG10 Details looks about right. If it were my coin, I would throw it on ebay. I think $250 is slightly lowball if you ask me. I bet it would fetch more on the bay. Start at $300 and see what happens. Just my 2 cents ;)

That is way too bad about that big chip in the rim. I would actually go a bit higher and say F-12 details from a TPG with a shot at 15. The details look a full grade stronger than my VG8(which was considered strong for the grade). The reverse lines in the fasces look almost complete, solid rims, lots of details in lib's face and feathers are strong. Also, 16-ds with this much remaining detail are exponentially scarcer than lower grades. I agree with sending it to ANACS as your best bet. I think she could fetch $400-$500 easily in plastic, possibly more.

I agree about being able to get more than $250 for the coin. I checked on ebay for 16-D's and they are selling for at least $700 and they look to be in way worse condition than mine and weren't authenticated. I just don't know how I feel about putting it up on ebay without getting it authenticated. I wouldn't want to rip anyone off. I also don't know if I feel like spending $25 - $50 to find out that it is not authentic. I'm suprised that any local coin shop wouldn't be able to tell if it is real or not. I guess if it is a fake, it's a really good one. I guess I have to decide what to do. Thank you all again.

I would say is a good shot at F-15, but the damage will bring it down to G-6 price at most. Authentication is a guarantee that this coin is genuine, if it is genuine. A bargaining chip to sell either to your dealer or on ebay. Is a sure sell at least for $600+ if genuine.

macmercury would know best ;)
I looked at the coin again and would agree it has F Details. Authenticate it first before selling. I bet there would be a little bidding war on it. Although damaged, it has good detail.

Ok, a little update. I went to another coin store to have them look at it and get a second opinion. This dealer spent a little more time with the coin. He even pulled out grading books and counterfeit books. He said that my coin is definitely real. He said that it is NOT worth sending it to get authenticated because it would cost $50 and they will not package it or rate it because of the damage. All they would do is tell me that it is real. He said that there is no doubt in his mind that it is real. He also said that he would value it at $350 to $400 in the condition that it is in. (There is also a scratch mark under the "D" mint) He said without the damage for at least $700. Thoughts?

Sounds right. Did he value it at $350 or offer you $350? It may cost you less than $50 for a genuine holder, but if you sold it yourself on ebay you might see more than $350, so it's probably worth sending in for a "genuine" slab.

He said a value of $350 to $400. He said that because of the damage they would NOT even put it in a holder. So he said it's not worth sending it to get authenticated.
