Hi All!!! Hope Thanksgiving was good for everyone! I just got in the mail 2 coins that I purchased on ebay. 1. 1963 Franklin half Silver Cameo Proof coin 2. 1976S Kennedy half Deep Cameo Proof coin First... as a beginner... I must say that these are truely beautiful coins. I read in the Glossary what a proof, a cameo and a deep cameo means... but how do you value them. They are not officially graded. The info in RedBook is fairly limited and doesn't list the cameo. Also, how common are the Franklins and Kennedys in this condition? and what is the best way to store them? I like the album... but feel more secure in the sleeve... and even if in the sleeve should they be wrapped in tissue for cusion? (I know... I bought before I had the info... I'm trying to apply the brakes!!! ) Oh, and Bryan... if you are reading... you mentioned software earlier... ok, I'm assuming this is hard core collecting... but when do you consider that and what kind do you get... (probably another topic!) TIA!!!

If you put them in tissue and scratch the fields, you will have just ruined your coins, tissue is not good for protecting proofs. They should have come in a flip or something similar? Later you can buy some other protection for them, or put them in an album. Leave them in the flips or 2x2's for now.

I think before you do anything you should talk to someone who collects them raw and find out how they store them. Tissue is out the question and flips are probably out the question too. Soft flips usually contain plasticizer that can leech and ruin them. Hard flips, which are safe for long term storage, are also the most difficult to work with. It's not hard at all for a coin to rub when your putting them in a hard flip. If the coin is circulated or low end Unc it's probabably a mote point. It's not mote with Proofs and Cams. If you'd like to see just how hard it is, take an inexpensive half and coat with nail polish. And a few days later put it in a hard flip and look at with a loup, especially the rims. You'll see where the nail polish peeled. But don't tell OldDan or Cisco I mentioned nail polish.

sheepy, there are some software that some people use that is free and I actually started using coinmanage (not free) when I first started collecting because I wanted a way to keep track of what I had and it assigns a value to the coin so if something was to happen my wife wouldn't be totally in the dark about the coins I had left. Allot of people here just use spread sheets to keep track of their coins but if you are looking for software I would probably try one of the free ones if I were you and if it just didn't do what you was wanting I would venture out to find something that did. There are alot of newer programs than what I am using that are probably allot better but I havenm't done any testing of anything in awhile (but I am sure others here have) I was kind of a computer geek and messing around with cracking software when I started collecting and thats when I went out searching for a program to do coin inventory and test my cracking skills (I do not condone this behavior but it is part of my past) and since I have gotten out of the game I have purchased legal copies of the software (probably out of guilt) but if I were looking now I would probably do some testing before I chose one I wanted to stick with

Thanks All, They came in the card board with the plastic window... is that the hard flip? I didn't know if I should wrap the "flip" in tissue or if the card board was thick enough to keep them from rubbing slightly...? I want albums... maybe put on my Christmas wish list... as for software... I'm not computer saavy... not even close... I'll probably just keep a list to start... or maybe a spreadsheet... cool to know I have a computer "geek" to ask questions to!

Welcome to the forum. You could just leave them in those.

They sound like staple holders. The problem with those are dust. The staples are also a problem when your removing a coin from them. Be very careful! "Oooops" is a really bad word to hear around Cams and Proofs. I would *guess* that the hard capsules would work. I believe that's what the Mint puts their Proofs in.

I think I already learned that one... I think I dinged the wing on my first Walker... cause I really didn't remember the ding when I bought it... (crying...:( ) on the coins that don't cost as much... (like a Franklin vs a Morgan) when do you decide if you should get it graded? I was very happy with these 2... and I don't think I over paid on these... (like I have on a few others...)

You can tell if you did or not by the look of the metal. New scratches will have a "fresh cut" look. I'm not really the one to ask about when it's time to get it graded. I sorta have an attitude problem with TPGs. I can only say that if it cost more than $100 I would want it authenticated which means getting it graded as well. But that's just my own arbitrary figure.

Welcome Sheepy !!!
If you're going to put proofs in an album, be real careful so you don't scratch the surfaces with the slides (like on Dansco Albums) or generate fingerprints or other kinds of damage. For proofs, I'd buy a few Airtites to keep them in.

I use airtites, I only collect raw coins , and I will not put proofs in folders or albums,
as for your coins, without pics and knowing what you paid , there is no way we can help you with the value -VS- cost of them.
proofs are very touchy , and the card board 2X2's are not adequate long term storage for them.

Rick, I will snap some photos... I didn't that I should put them in the album... I like the album idea... but was looking at the ones my dad has and questioned how well your coins would be protected. I really like the "nice" coins better than the low grades... does that sound snobby or what? I will look for airtites.

Ok, here they are... are these pics ok? 1963 Franklin Silver Half "Proof Cameo" paid $9.01 1976S Kennedy half "Proof Deep Cameo" Paid $3.75 now, I was reading one of the topics and they were talking about paperwork. These are not graded... hence my question on that... I didn't know if it was worth it...? Image: 1963 Franklin Obv.jpg94.9 KB Image: 1963 Franklin Rev.jpg99.88 KB Image: 1976 Kennedy Obv.jpg100.52 KB Image: 1976 Kennedy Rev.jpg94.74 KB I don't see any dings on the rims... haven't taken them out of their covers... (too scared!) On the Kennedy Rev... you may notice what looks like scratches at 10... when I tilt coin they actually reflect and show double... am guessing the plastic is scratched? Also on the Kennedy Obv... there is a scratch at 8... it doesn't reflect so that probably knocks it hugh?
