Hey all...
am checking out Heritage... (thank Texasmick!) anyways... was looking at the V's and I found this one & noticed what looks like a die crack around the stars in the obv and the words on the rev... in the photo... but don't find it in the listing... soooo...
1. Is it a die crack
2. Does it make it more valuable
3. How come (if it is...) don't they have it on the description?
http://coins.heritageauctions.com/c...&Lot_No=7294
TIA...

1) yes, those are obv and rev die cracks, the dies were probably close to failure
2) die cracks dont necessarily add value unless they are indicative of a particular variety (one example- 1861-O Seated half dollar, one variety has a die crack on obverse. The obverse die used to make that variety was the same obverse die used to make the four original Confederate half dollars. That die crack makes the half dollar 3+ times as valuable as a regular one)
3) nickel coins from the 1800s were plagued with die crack problems due mainly to the hardness of nickel and poorly tempered steel dies. As technology improved, most of those problems went away but still occurred occasionally. Since they were so common from that time period, they are not usually listed on a slab.

I agree die cracks in most cases add no value to the coin,, unless as mentioned they can be attributed to certian varieties , like the Morgan dollar vams.

and it is Nickel not nickle .
