Hi everybody

I just want to know how do you organise your collections to get some ideas on how to sort out mine. Do you mix old ones with the ones that are still in circulation?, per year? geographically?

Thanks

Not well would be my guess. I have a few danscos, and a few boxes of 2x2s, and then a couple of tubes, and some low value stuff just in a pile.

Wow, as usual I'm very jealous; you guys have BINDERS full of coins! I have just enough stuff in flips (plus 3 very old ANACS slabs) to spread over my desktop whenever I need an emotional pick-me-up. No organising needed

For the most part, Dansco albums for each series I collect. I do have some Dansco albums that hold cardboard 2x2s. I use them for my dark side (non-US) and miscellaneous extra coins.

Hi all,
Intersting to see the different approaches of eveyone.
For myself, I have them all in an 2x2 and sorted per country. On the 2x2 is written country, date, KM number and currency of the coin.

How do you guys store all information digital? Made a excel sheet with all data on it?

I can't even spell organize. If you ever do find the secret please let me know. I have been organizing mine for over 10 years. I might be 1/3 or the way finished. At that rate, I'll be 70 and to old to see them when I get done.

2x2s in binders organized by denom. Good stuff in individual Air-Tites inside appropriate Air-Tite albums, or in rolls. Also have a couple of Capital Holders for sets.

I'm sort of an outcast here since I basically use all Whitman Classic Albums. I do have some Dansco ones too but with well over 100 Whitman Albums, way to late to start changing. I have tried to convert people here to Whitman but I guess they are just to smart.
Mostly I am an Album person. I hate to start a series without an Album to put them in.
As to organizing. The Albums do that for you.

Whatever system you use to sort your coins, it should be as convenient and easy to use as possible. Exactly what that means for you is largely up to you: is it more important to insert new additions easily, to find a specific coin when you need to, or simply to display the collection to yourself and/or others in a pleasing and aesthetic fashion?

Since I'm mainly a one-from-every-country collector, my main collection is in binders, sorted A to Z, then sub-sorted within that by government/monetary system, denomination and date. There are separate binders for ancients, mediaevals, tokens and medals.

The secondary collection, mostly date-duplicates and coins that aren't in as nice a condition, go in albums sorted by continent. Those albums started out sorted nice and neat but are pretty messy right now; since I usually can't be fussed re-sorting them each time I acquire more coins, I just shove the new acquisitions in anywhere they will fit.

The paper money collection is very untidy right now, perhaps a reflection of it's relatively low status compared to the coins.

Digitally, I have a coin-specific database program. It's got far more fields than I find convenient to use, but I store all the critical stats for each coin: country, date, mintmark, catalogue number, composition, condition, brief summaries of what's on the obverse and reverse, any theme or subject the coin fits well with, purchase details (date, price paid, and who from) and any specific comments about the coin I need to make. There's room for up to four pictures, too, but I rarely other inserting them.

There's only one word to describe how I organize my collection. Haphazardly!

My US Half Cents and Large cents are in 2x2 holders arranged by series, date and variety. All information is on a spread sheet, just the date/variety is on the 2x2.

My foreign coins (abt. 20K) are waiting in bags sorted by country.KM#, for an appropriate holding system to be chosen. More valuable ones are in individual paper flips.

How do you organize your collection.
This has been ever changing problem for me.

I think I have settled on... having a place to put every type coin you collect. Right now I have Dansco albums for most of the sets I collect. I also have a lighthouse coin case for Commemorative dollars and another coin case for better or slabbed coins or coins that do not have holes in the Dansco albums.

Then for the extra coins, I have a separate 2X2 (cardboard) box for dollars, half dollars, quarters,
Indian head cents/Buffalo nickels, type coins and foreign coins. I do use the smaller 1 1/2 X 1 1/2 (3 row cardboard) boxes for Lincoln cents, Jefferson nickels and Mercury/Roosevelt dimes, separate box for each.

For the extra BU State/ATB quarters. I put together boxes with 50 square tubes each. These boxes are to keep P and D mints separate. Each state or park has it's own tube.

So now when I get a new coin I know where it will go.

Thank you all for your comments, I am learning a lot through them.

So far all I have are: plastic coin pockets/holders, an album and a bunch of coins in a bag. Would you def. advise to put the coins in cardboards?
I was reading yesterday that it is not a good idea to put the coins in direct contact with the plastic holders. Is this correct? do you know why?

Thank you again.
