Doubling is usually regular isn't it? I don't know what to make of the top of this left wing. If it was doubling wouldn't the doubling be more of a regular line versus what is shown here? At first I thought it was a scratch but its not, it is raised. Could the die have been deteriorated or broken to cause the irregular press? I'm thinking this is VAM 3 or 12 but the coin condition and lack of samples makes it difficult. Its a far date with a high 2 and the 2 looks awfully large like those posted in VW. What am I missing or calling right here? This may be a chip on the outside top left loop. This may be debris above the bottom horizontal bottom. This looks like a chip outside the eye.

Yeah, I kind of like VAM-12 for this one. Have a look at VAM-10. The wing "doubling" is likely Machine Doubling, which can be irregular in nature.

VAM 12 looks dead center date placement( the 1 location for the far date) while your picture is slightly left and does appear to have the curved line VAM 10 has..I'm thinking VAM 10..note there isn't a full view of the VAM 10 date placement, but I think the 12 is just off from your coin to put it in the VAM 10 class..

Thanks aladin! 10 it is then. How does VW get updated? and could a VW member contribute their coin photos to help update and build upon the site and photo inventory of examples?

VAMworld is a wiki, to which anyone can contribute. Contributions are patrolled by more senior people, of course, but any member can add photos and copy. This coin, although we've tentatively attributed it, really needs to be compared to a "known" VAM-10 for precise date and mint mark placement, and discussion of how circulation and die wear might affect what looks to me to be a weaker line in the denticles than the plate image shows.

One of the most important things to learn in VAMMING, is..many a VAM has few photo's to absolutely attribute it, AS SD has acknowledged..While small details of things like date placement or Mint mark placement can sway slightly left or right, they are the basis of determining the the VAM...for this VAM10 persey... AS I researched the history for the year and VAM, there are no posted pictures of the date..meaning it will take some advice from one of the VM members who have one to confirm or deny your posted pictures...with few coins in your date placement I felt it was VAM 10.. post it on VW and see what they think...Asking questions has always been a good thing...there are many who will help...let us know what you find, it helps us all...

As always, Thank you both!!
There are those of us who want to learn and attempt to research on our own and ask questions when we get stumped. You two, and many others, graciously give your time and share your knowledge, experience and opinions.

for some its just a hobby, and for others its an addiction to know and understand...not only the how's and whys, but which came first the chicken or the egg...the coin shows us the details like a photograpgh, a short shot in time of the dies life and errors that occur and/or are whipped out as the die er-rodes...from the pressures of minting...some features can represent a "LOCK" on the current understanding of the known VAM, while as time goes by there are those who collect every coin they can for a certain year to discover what happened over the course of the minting process, which includes all die doubling, clashes, die cracks and die BREAKS and gouges and small die markers (pimples) and how they appear and then disappear with age(the dies usage) these are the things that make the error common or not..While some of us have absolutely nothing better to do LO, actually we do...but are addicts to the chicken VS the egg.. and its from your questions we continue to expand our knowledge, We do thankyou for all of your posts,,Incidently I recently discovered, the chicken was trying to cross a 6 lane highway? wonder if that helps or hurts the egg version of the story?

Well said. And as to the 6 lane highway, another question...

one can always wonder if the egg wobbled its way half way across before hatching, finished crossing or turned back..one could watch that new movie RANGO... the answer is in the dirt! or is it paydirt? with our old junk?

By the way, I posted on VW and am waiting to see if someone has a confirmed 10 to compare or the DP. The 2 cleaned up and there is no chip off the 2 or the eye. What remains is the curved line in the denticles between the 9 & 2, and the apparent MD on the wing.
