Was just given a cache of mixed Finnish coins by a friend ranging in date from 1901 to 1965. Most of them are in pretty good shape but I have no idea how to grade these. They appear to mostly be VF to EF and there are atleast 2 silver ones (1964 and 1965 1 Markka coins). Any experts on Finnish coinage here?

I have quite a few Finnish coins, both from the Tsarist period and after independence. If you post pics, I'll give my opinion on grade. That's sure nice of your friend!

I wouldn't call myself en expert, but I have at least seen plenty of Finnish coins before, and I have a few in my collection. I am more than willing to throw in my Two Cents, or perhaps I should say my two penniƤ.

The older occupation coins you have are more common dates. Post pics, and I'll try to help with grade and value.

Under the assumption that your grades hold, these are catalogue values given in a Nordic catalogue. It should be more precise then Krause.
1865 50 Pennia maybe VF F: $40, VF: $100 1942 1 markaa EF - EF: $9 1963 50 pennia VF+ - VF: $0,4, EF: $2 1911 1 pennia VF - VF: $2 1941 1 markaa F+ - F: $0,6, VF: $2 1945 1 markaa F - F: $0,4 1951 5 markaa VF - VF: $1 1952 10 markaa VF+ - VF: $1, EF: $10
Please note that Nordic grading can be somewhat strict.

Thank you so much. I tried to be pretty conservative about grading, so this is exciting news. Hope to get some pics up soon.

Litotes quotes on value shows how far off Krause can be, which lists the 1865 50p at $15 in VF. That's why I didn't bother. I'm sure my 1999 Siegs katalog is higher too.

hopping_rabbit, your 50 penniƤ lies somewhere in between a Nordic VF (or 1+ as we use here) and a Nordic F (called 1). The value should likewise fall between the listed $40 and $100. At least that is my opinion. Others might disagree.
DVCollector, I have no doubt whatsoever that your 1999 version of SIEG is closer to the truth than any version of Krause, both for Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, Finland and especially for Norway. We Nordics tend to feel neglected when we look at Krause prices. My most recent Krause catalogue is the 1700th century version from 2010. An example of a Norwegian coin. Let's just take the first one listed in Krause and compare to SIEG. 1 skilling 1701: Krause 2010 gives: VG: $125, F: $250, VF: $500, EF: $900 SIEG 2010 gives: VG: $900, F: $1500, VF: $2100, EF: Not known to exist
More than a slight difference....and I can assure you, prices in SIEG is not too high when compared to market prices.

Thank you so much litotes for your very helpful advice. I had it valued at about 15 dollars. In your opinion what is a fair starting price for this coin on auction? Thank you for your input.

Litotes one other question: do you have any information on the more scarce or rare or variety modern (post 1960's) Finnish coins. I am really falling in love with Finland mintages and may start collecting Finnish coins to try to get a set...any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you so much.

Litotes, with the grade you gave on the 50p. I tend to grade according to Siegs. And, I'm sure you wish you could buy Nordic coins at Krause prices. Generally speaking, that's what I pay for older coins from the Nordic countries. If there's any interest in specific dates, let me know...no problem mailing coins to Norway. Hopping_rabbit--if you'd like to see a few of my older Finland coins, I have posted some here.

hopping_rabbit, if you want to sell it then I suggest ebay with promise to send overseas. Something like this: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Finland-50-...em1c0d8d310bBut if you want to start a collection, the coin is a keeper. As for information about scarce modern coins I am not sure I follow your meaning. There are some difficult commemmoratives. Otherwise thare are some key dates, but nothing very difficult. The rarities in Finnish coinage tend to be somewhat older than this.
