Have you all seen this thing? If not, check the cover of the Sep issue of Coin World. OMG, THIS is what the mint came up with? This is the worst medal I have ever seen. I normally defend the mint, but not on this. This thing is atrocious. The obverse is a barely recognizeable version of lady liberty. She looks like some stoned cavewoman holding the lantern. There are two columns, I guess some representation of the towers, behind her. It says always remember and 2001-2011. Always remember what prey tell? THEY DONT HAVE 9/11 ANYWHERE ON THE COIN. Just 2001-2011. Remember the decade? Remember some indistinct colums? What am I supposed to remember? The reverse. It says Honor Hope on the bottom. There is a God awful eagle that looks like a lost relative of the mechanical Owl from the original Clash of The Titans. And then a bunch of wavy lines running top to bottom. AND THATS IT. This is what they come up with to honor those that fell on that day?

I think the politically "correct" might have had a hand in this. Personally, I think it should have been a picture of the twin towers billowing smoke and a motto of something like "To Honor Them, Never Forget." On a T-shirt design websites I tried to submit a design such as this. They told me it was against company policy to post any picture of 9/11 that showed destruction b/c they did not want to offend anyone.

It would have been in really bad taste. You wouldn't make a WWII commemorative medal with images of bombed out cities.

I agree, this design is toned way down (watered down) to appease the PC police.

yeah lame coin Plus the WW2 point stated above is kind of wrong look at the commemorative war coins, they show war scenes with soldiers at least the towers standing or something would've been nice, the smoke might have been a bit much but hey, everyones a critic

The medal design simply "stinks". If you show this to a noncollector right off the street and do a survey, they would not what this medal is for. "Hope and peace" could be related to almost any traumatic event. The medal shows no tie to the intended subject, the rememberance of 9/11. The 2 bars does not even resemble the WTC. The image resembles an offering being made at a Greek/Roman temple.
There are far better images that could have been used. The internet is full of more relatable images that would seem more memorable.
Showing a bombed out building such as the WWII reference or even the dead bodies inside the Auschwitz or other concentration camps would be deemed inappropriate. Showing a rescue in front of a building or even a mother and her children walking, or the emaciated men standing along the fence in their tattered cloths (not clothing).
Images like that mentioned will have the impact need for rememberance and this US Mint medal does NOT have that impact.
The images are there, but some someone at the mint...I don't know.

Showing rescue workers would have been good idea. I don't think it was political correctness so much as the general lack of artistic vision that's been going on at the Mint for the better part of the last century. Most modern commemoratives are pretty uninspired in my opinion. This is just a continuation of the tradition of "blah".
I don't mind that they used a stylized representation of the towers. For the first decade or two of their existence they were considered an eyesore. But it really could have used some sort of more clear indication as to what it was about... I mean, other stuff happened in 2001. For all anybody knows, this medal could be about the Gujarat earthquake. (although the phrases "Always Remember" and/or "Never Forget" are pretty strongly associated with 9/11)

I agree that it's terrible. What are the wavy lines behind the eagle supposed to represent? Since the two bars on the front are supposed to represent the WTC, where's homage to the pentagon or the flight that went down in PA? They should've put a representation of the firefighters hoisting the flag from that famous picture the day after. That would've been much more symbolic and powerful.
And I would have to say that's the worst depiction of liberty on a US coin. They should've hired whoever designed the norfed liberty dollars.

I have to admit, I bought it. The only reason I bought it was because one of my best friend's mom wsa working in the tower at the time. But I do agree, it is horrible. Lady Liberty doesn't even look like a women. She looks like a man. And don't even get me started on the eagle...

The blame does not lie with the Mint. Potential designs are chosen by the CFA and the CCAC. The Treasury Secretary has final veto/approval of all coinage designs. There are also further design constraints from the authorizing legislation itself. http://www.numismaster.com/ta/numis...icleId=18314

In my opinion, they could've worked the design off of this image. I think everyone would've known they symbolism.

I was just going to say, I think they should have borrowed on that iconic image of the rescue workers and the flag posted above. The PO did this for the commerative stamp, I have a sheet of those and cherish them.

I agree with most of the posters here, the medal is hideous. It looks like it was designed on a compuer running windows 3.1. I'm sure any halfast graphics designer could have doen a better job.
