Had my semi-annual appointment with my new Family doctor and the following is the conversation that ensued:
>Doctor:"so Glenn, what do you do for a past time?"
>Me:"I'm a Numismatist!"
>Doctor:"What is a Numismatist?"
>Me:"I collect Canadian coins."
>Doctor:"Oh, people still do that stuff?"
>Me:"Yes, why wouldn't they?"
>Doctor:"Nobody uses money any more, why would they bother collecting it?"
>Me:(blood pressure rising)People smoke dope, gamble, are addicted to tobacco/alcohol, what is soo bad about collecting coins?"
>Doctor:"I suppose it's the lesser of the evil's!"
>Me:"Doc, what do you do for a pastime?"
>Doctor:"I'm a stamp Collector."

That's funny.

I'm not sure, but I think that stamps will become obsolete before coins do. More people using the internet instead of mailing stuff. That affects the coins too, but I think the postage stamp will be the first to bite the bullet.

Good one! My local monthly coin show is a combination coin & stamp show, at a local hotel, at opposite ends of the conference room aisle. After attending the packed coin show (can't even move with all the gawkers), you have to walk by the stamp room, and it's the quietest spot in the hotel!

That's hilarious (but brutal) ...

Ummm glenzy1, your new doctor doesn't sound like he was top of his class, so if and when he says, "geeesh glenzy1, looks like we're gonna hafta cut-off a few parts" ...

=> I'd definitely be askin' for a second opinion!

I pay most bills online, so I rarely use stamps. Today I used bills to purchase a milk shake and got coins in change.

Why would you collect paper? At least as a coin collector, if your collection is in a fire, you still have lumps of gold, silver and copper bullion. A stamp collector would just have ash.

And how do they get their stuff after using the Interwebs?

The majority of stuff I buy online comes with a pre-printed label with metered mail. No stamps.

Stamps aren't collected for their fire-retardant qualities, but for the same reason coins are--beauty, scarcity, historic value, etc.
That said, I've been told by a few dealers that quality counterfeits have taken a huge toll on collector demand/value. Obviously, a lot less engineering is needed to forge stamps than coins. Hearing that gave me pause, hoping coin forgeries never get as widespread as stamps.
Rest in Peace
