I've seen BU War Nickel sets running around $45 on ebay lately. The BU wheats might bring a couple dollars extra. Personally, With the picture provided I'd offer $40 shipped if they were offered. Ok, maybe a little more

captain is right on. I would probably be willing to go $45 shipped, because I like that set.

It is hard to say as the grade of the coins are not given. From the far away pictures shown here I see some carbon spots on some of the nickels but all look lustrous using zoom on my pc. A set like this with coins all being MS62 would be one value and all being MS66 would be a lot higher. It appears these are probably a mix of such grades and in between most likely. The nickels as a set alone in uncirculated are generally selling for anywhere from $69.00 to $99.00 on completed items on ebay and some selling much higher. The close-up images provided in auctions making the difference. I don't like the carbon spots on the 1943 S and 1943 D obverses of those War nicks and some of the Lincolns have a bit of dark areas making them blotchy. With the nice steel Lincolns and the possibility of easily upgrading a few spotted coins, I think if I needed a set like this it would be worth a gamble of paying at least $70.00 but I am far more fussy about my War Nickels to buy these without asking for much better images. The price of one nice MS67 full step War Nickel could be worth an easy $35.00 or more by itself. A ""nicky" and "baggy" carbon spotted War Nickel in uncirculated could be worth as little as a buck over melt value to me or less.

Thanks, I was going to try to pick up a set or 2 and am not a nickel collector but have read quite a few posts about altered War Nickels being sold as BU. Search I just did on ebay showed BU sets going for around $90-130 (not sure why) and circulated ones $24-40. Appreciate the input. Jim

These guys above are not wrong by the way, they are exactly right as to what a set like this is worth to them. You are entitled to be exactly right at what they are worth to you just as well. A coin or set is worth whatever you are willing to pay for it. To get a bargain, it should be considerably less than what you are willing to pay. The grade of the coins is a major factor which is unknown so we have to assume the worst and be pleasantly surprised and not disappointed. Ask the seller for better images.

Nickel, you and I were posting at the same time. I didn't see your initial response.
No, I appreciate what both Ck and Bj said, and I agree, its worth what its worth to the buyer, but within reality. Thanks, I'll ask for better photos.

#1 [eBayItem]370535183746[/eBayItem] looks dipped #2 [eBayItem]160636169169[/eBayItem] looks like it could have a slider AU or two but if a BU set might almost be a fair final price but the 5 th one looks dipped to me and probably AU details. #3 [eBayItem]180709921045[/eBayItem] looks nice and problem free in original natural condition with album toning. I like No. 3 the best.

[eBayItem]110739109786[/eBayItem] Is a pretty nice looking set and I would have no problem replacing the 1945 D because of the condition of the reverse. I will predict this set sells for maybe $71.00 then add the $5.00 shipping. I like this set too [eBayItem]120773246288[/eBayItem] but you get what you pay for.

Nickleguy, you just changed everything in my search for this set. Your last post convinced me that buying a set is not the way to go unless great pictures are provided. I should have known better then to believe all the coins are actually BU and not dipped. Thanks for the post southsav and sorry I have hijacked it.

No problem CK, I appreciate the discussion and learning,as I said, I'm not a nickel collector.
Putting together a complete Unc War set would still run about the same, wouldn't it?
Nickel, I happen to have both those on watch. I was going to post in WTB my quest for a Unc set. Maybe someone will see this.

Just a note: One thing about these sets. Check those steelies and make sure they are not reprocessed. If the other coins are in great shape then it would not really matter on the steelies then. However, a nice BU steely brings a decent premium. A reprocessed one only a nickel, or a buck for someone who wants an example or learning tool. Those sets do come apart pretty easily so you can check the edges on the steels.
