I thought I would post my two most recent purchases. They are an 1857 Flying Eagle Snow-16. I really think this is a cool variety with the Die Cud in the wing. It's a low grade coin with a weak strike and may have had an old cleaning, but I didn't pay too much and really like this series and this variety. The second is an 1864L IHC with a cool repunched date. I had a really nice AU50 1864L Snow-4, but traded it to Rick Snow for an 1869 Snow3 and an 1897 Snow 1 because it is a little out of place in my collection at that grade level. My IHCs and FEs are mainly VF-EF. ANACS graded the 1864L at VF20 and notes the repunched date. I used my attribution guide and believe it's a Snow-3. I also feel that this is more of a F15 coin, a really nice one, but don't know if it warrants the VF designation due to the rub in "Liberty."

Yeah, I like the Cud on the wing. Never seen anything like it. I think I might start the flying eagle and indian head set. Can anyone give me a rough estimate on how much the keys and semi-keys will run me?

Rough estimate....A LOT. Unless you go low grade, then only...a lot.
1877 and 1909s are the two biggies, assuming you are not trying for an 1856.
But there are lots of "semi keys" that get pricey above VF20 grade
But it is a really nice collection to complete. Go for it.

Very nice coins David! I really like the chocolate brown color of the RPD 1864.
The FE looks like something is dripping from his wing!

Hambone, this is the series I am working on. I am doing F-XF coins with the exception of the 1877 I just picked up which is a VG. As jfransch mentioned, there are many so called semi-keys such as the late 60's coins and early 70's. Some of these can get pricey like the 1869 I just picked up...VF25...$300 coin.
If you stick to lower grade coins, you can save some bucks.

Love the 1864 L.
Made me check mine for a repunch but no such luck.

Hambone - very compelling set to build, gets to be an obsession, I highly recommend

I think I'll start out trying a VG-F set, then I can upgrade if I want to later. They are great looking coins, and I know I wouldnt have any trouble trying to trade duplicates here

Off to buy a dansco...

IMO, VG is a nice grade for the keys and semi=key. With this series, there is still plenty of detail, but the coins still much less expensive then all VF+
