Long Beach--that should be a slightly bigger show than say, Kirkland. Have fun!

One more coin won - but gosh, it was hard to wake up this morning :D I was looking for the superb Klippe which was listed (1733 8 reales in geometric shape) - but did get hit hard by another online bidder (went over my limit twice, and left it go). (and I'm not talking about 8 reales royals yesterday, which I enjoyed checking but which were over my budget)
Next auction on monday - with cheaper coins :) And then - Cayon auction at the end of the week, and Aureo mail only auction the week after.

I was watching that Klippe go and it got very solid money for the grade. But then again - it was a very original coin.
I ended-up winning that 1809 Mexico 8 reales in MS63.

Yep, that's why I stopped, the coin was great but it was just too much ... I'll find another nice one, uncertified this time (there are often less buyers on uncertified coins) I also stopped on both royal cobs (I didn't even played on the Luis I one) - but the price was more justified on those (they are so scarce ...) I won those lots : Ferdinand VI gold Cob 8 Escudos 1749-R Lima (25464) Luis I cob 8 Reales 1727-Y (23609) Ferdinand VI gold 4 Escudos 1750/3-J (23784) Couldn't find yours online - and I have left my catalogs at the office ... Anyway, MS63, that would give a nice price as well, and for sure a beautiful coin ! Oh forget it, found your other posts, with pictures of the coin :) Tell us how it looks, I'm also curious to see what they call MS63 on this set. Yours has a weak strike. I actually prefer coins which don't look too "new" though (but with much details left). That one from a previous sale looks great though : http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...&lotNo=22954

Congratulations on your wins. That 1749 definitely caught my eye when the lots were zooming by. Nothing like gold cobs with nice skin. That 1809 is not really the look I usually go for, but after submitting a few coins that I thought would grade MS @ NGC and receiving AU grades I'm just really curious. Most likely will end-up flipping it shortly after receiving it. Here's an MS63 from PCGS that I own and right down my alley in terms of "the look":

Wow, that 8 reales is really awesome ! That's the kind of look I prefer over the one you just won :) Moreover it's very well struck :) Well, I suppose it would go for more in an auction though :D I just wish it didn't had a finger mark on the bottom right castle :/ (am I correct ?)
About your other coins, maybe you didn't go with the proper examiner ... or maybe he was not specialized enough on those early coins which were often not completely struck. I'm curious as well :)

Yup, sure does look like a fingerprint on the reverse. I'd like to think it belongs to then-president of the US James Madison, who handled this piece of 8 before carefully putting it away in his coin colleciton ;)
To your point about examiners, it's hard to be a general grader and at the same time to know all the series-specific characteristics. PCGS routinely downgrades for strike imperfections when in series like the armored bust of Ferdinand VII (or the pre-1842 Zacatecas eagles) strike weakness is the norm. I've noticed NGC is a bit better when it comes to that, but they would still often err on the side of caution and give the coin an AU58 grade over an MS62-63 grade.

Great coin. The fingerprint is a non issue in my mind, these were coins made to be used, not modern proof manufactured collectables. I like a coin with some character, for heavens sake the thing is almost 200 years old. Interesting to me that you would value a TPG graders opinion over your own (referencing the coins you thought would get Unc grades and came back AU). You have a great collection (I have watched your posts here and elsewhere), I bet you know more about these coins than the grader that put a number on the plastic tomb. I think the complexity of these coins is why so few are submitted to TPGs. As for my own collection, I say why bother...I know what I like and I know what I don't like and I am comfortable with the condition of the coin or I would not have bought it. Unless you are selling the coin, I see no reason to slab these beautiful 8s.

We are not on faceook or google+ , but that last post really deserves a +1 :) I totally agree with jfransch, I'm not - at all - on this grading craziness. I see this as another way for some to make money (and a LOT when you see prices between different MS levels). The only opinion that counts to me is your own opinion - and everything you know about the coin and its history. This has way more value than everything else.
About the fingerprint - I don't mind much, and I prefer it much more with it than the previous slabbed coin TwoKopeiki won on ha I was even wondering wether it could be scanned and searched for in some database :p Oh, and about proofs ... I don't like them either. I only collect coins that are made to be used, proofs are IMHO another area of collection (as medals are for example, or as different pieces of art). (I got a proof set of my birth date, in dollars and another one in french francs ... that's the only exception with the one of my wife and son)

I'm afraid that I'm caught in a Registry craze with my collection. A few years ago I helped folks @ NGC and PCGS put together Mexico registry sets and I now feel responsible to participate. Plus until I finish building my own site I have to rely on others to host the images. I currently own https://www.resplandores.com and https://www.ochoreales.net and going to build them out eventually with research and photos. And Mathieu - quit picking on me for the HA win. I'm not proud of what I've done and it most likely will not stay more than a couple of months in my collection :)

That one is really awesome :) I actually stopped - for now - collecting coins after Carolus IV - mainly because the spanish empire was starting to be dismantled, and also because there were so much variety (catalan occupation, independence war in different colonies and so on) I think I'll soon rethink that and go a bit further - that period is very interesting indeed.
Oh, if you need help with your site or image hosting ... that's my job since over 12 years now (I'm actually on the internet since 1995). I can host your coin pictures if that avoids you to have them slabbed just for this ;)
