Are currently being sold on Home Shopping Network..
499.00, Apparently they were in the vault there.
If the proceeds went to the victims that would be one thing but I have seen no mention of that.
Maybe it's me but it just seems wrong all around..

there was a lot of gold and silver in the vaults at the twin towers
in the 200 millions is something I recall hearing back when the towers fell
they did recover quite a bit if not all of it

I find it abhorrent and disgusting that they were able to recover all the 'goods', but not all of the victims.

Why?

PMs are inherently more survivable than fragile flesh and bones.

And they were likely stored in concrete and steel vaults so they would survive more than people. I don't see anything disgusting or wrong with recovering the PM's to be honest.

What is it exactly that they are selling? A special ASE?

The COMEX vaults were relatively unscathed, just covered in debris. I believe they were finally dug out in November.

I am a retired firefighter. I find NOTHING wrong with these being sold, regardless of where the money goes. There is absolutely no reason to be outraged IMO. Its not like they are selling personal items recovered or pieces of fire trucks or the like. These were investment coins to start with and thats what they are now.

and as pointed out, flesh and bone burnes to ash in the fires involvedand said flesh and bone was not protected. There were no remains of most victims to be recovered. Fire proof vaults do work.

Here's a link:

Hope that works. And on the HSN site, they're listed at $399, not $499. While it feels a bit opportunistic given the timing, as others have said, I don't really see anything wrong with selling them. They were in fact in a vault under the towers which makes it a pretty interesting collectible, especially for those with vivid memories of that horrible time.

I, too, would also like to think that part of the proceeds went to benefit first responders' and victims' families charities (would actually entice me to buy one), but I see nothing like that on the HSN link.

Call me naive, but I thought only bullion bars were stored in the WTC.

They're graded by PCGS and the slab label specifies "WTC Ground Zero Recovery".

I guess if you don't trust PCGS...

I would start with this glaring fact.....

It's the HOME SHOPPING NETWORK GUYS !

HSN (Mike Mezack) has been ripping off the public selling massively overpriced coins for decades !
He sells A LOT of "slabbed coins". So, it's not whether or not you trust the Grading Company......it's the "price" they're selling them for.
Legit ? ..... obviously YES......worth the price ? .....Not if it's from them, IMO.
But as with so many things that they sell, if YOU think it's worth the money, then that's your prerogative to shell out the bucks for it. Whether they're the "Gold Plated State Qtrs", or the colorized Native Dollars or slabbed First Strike PF-70 ASE's ......whatever.
Recouping your money from so many of these kinds of purchases, will be difficult or impossible.....but a lot of people don't care about that, they just like what they see and/or what they have.

I would research "other" avenues of purchasing World Trade Center PM's......you will likely come up with MUCH more reasonable prices I suspect.

On the HSN site the bare holders are $399, they have one in a wooden box and that one is $499. And NONE of the WTC ASE's that they show were slabbed by PCGS. (Yes I know HSN says they are PCGS slabbed, but they are not.) Those were all encapluated by Collectors Universe and they just PCGS shells. The PCGS people never had anything to do with those coins. Later PCGS did get into the act slabbing WTC recovered coins but they can be identified because they all carry a numerical grade. None of these slabs do.

The original company that had Collectors Universe slab these coins did donate a portion of the sales to the WTC charities. They never said what percentage they were going to donate and there was never any total amount donated announced.

I have no problem with these coins being sold. What I do find offensive is that PCGS is apparently selling slabs to other companies. I can think of no reason besides deception for them to use a PCGS slab. In the long run this could hurt PCGS if people start to lose faith in what is really a PCGS slabbed coin and what is an imposter.
