I present this dime, up for auction on Teletrade, encased in a oldish-style NGC slab. Thoughts?

Blue is not an uncommon toning color for silver. I have a 1950-something Roosy in that same style of NGC slab and while the toning is stronger on the Merc, my dime has the same shade of blue.

I've seen blue before, but never by itself like that... Actually, come to think of it, I guess I've seen quite a few proofs with strong blue coloration.
It is pretty, regardless....
Great, now I want to buy it...

I'm sorry, kinda new to coin collecting, but how does toning effect the value of a coin? Normally does it increase or decrease, or have no effect at all?

It depends. Toning can be pretty or ugly. Some people love it and will pay a big premium, others only want white coins. Sometimes a beautifully toned coin has been doctored by someone, and hence, not original. Other times a white coin has been dipped, and hence, not original. I tend to be very suspect of toned coins that aren't all that old, but also old coins that are white (how many other silver artifacts from the 19th century are both uncleaned and still bright and untarnished?)

My thoughts? I am going to be among the final bidders for that coin, come Sunday night, if it's any indication.

Hey, I just got on the phone with the guy who's consigning it. Turns out he's getting rid of the coin because his kid went wild with a blue magic-marker. Guess it's just one of those things!

Quote: The blue is on the slab? Not a chance. Knowing the minimal depth-of-field available with coin macro photography, I'm quite sure the toning is on the coin. The coin's device details are sharply-focused, as are the edges of the toning where such edges are noted. They are therefore definitively on the same plane; had the "toning" been on the slab face, it would be out of focus. This one's a keeper, and I suspect it'll hammer significantly above the $60-ish range of similar results. I have a number in mind, and it ain't $65. You will rarely see me this enthusiastic about a toned coin.
