After these were minted, I thought they were put in storage because there were still some 2008 nickels that were not all released. So I was under the impression that the Federal Reserve had the bulk of them stored until they got rid of all the 2008 nickels. Whether that is true I don't know but they will eventually get out there. Perhaps anyone that knows of the low mintage of the 2009 nickels will put aside the BU rolls they get and the situation may be something like what happened with the 1950 D nickels. Most will be saved in BU condition. I think the 1950 D nickel is a much more important coin when compared to the 2009 P nickel in the average MS condition they can be found in. I saved about 10 or 20 BU 2009 nickels that were the best I found out of a couple rolls I bought. The 2009 P and D in my set are probably at least MS67 with full steps of course. I have never seen either one in my pocket change yet.

I have both P's and D's pulled from circulation of the '09 Jefferson. Some aren't the best of shape either, so yeah, BU ones -- I would definately keep regardless of opinions right now. 40 years from now, I'll see if it was worth it or not......if it gets added as a "semi-key" or just junk. They're just NICKELS....so it doesn't hurt me to save these in ANY condition. And it's ONE MORE THING TO LOOK FOR WHILE ROLL SEARCHING ! .....

Uggh. I had a few dozen nickels from a recent trip to Maine, I had no idea these were scarce, time to go back into the "to be recycled" change jar and look through them again......

I just moved to MI and haven't found one. In MO though I generated about three rolls. Don't know what's happened up north?

Since the days that mint sets were packaged properly, can anyone name a single BU coin that has any real value. The 82s and 83s had no mint sets. A few other years like 86 (epecially for quarters) carries a slight premium, but still. Especially these days with widespread information regarding mintages, everybody and their mother has easy access to bunches of these coins. I believe no future circulation strike will ever be worth anything ever again. Dealers probably have 100's of BU 2009 P nickels and might sell one per month, the coins can't ever be worth anything. People didn't hoard in 1950 like they do today, but they did hoard like crazy in 1968 with the S cent. BU rolls for that low mintage cent are still worth barely more than circulated rolls and neither is rare.

Found 2 09 P's searching rolls but no D's. You would have thought in Pa I would have found more P's.

I found a 2009P in my change about a month or so ago, and I live in Canada.

The lack of scarce circulation issues may increase interest and demand for errors and varieties among those who seek rarities.

I've searched over 50 boxes here in Denver and have found only ONE - yes ONE 2009-P nickel in circulation! I've also found exactly one each: 38D, 38S and 39D to give you some perspective. I'm up to about a roll on the 2009-D's.

Quote: I believe no future circulation strike will ever be worth anything ever again. .... WELL GOOD GOD GURDY ! Naw.....the contrarian argument against collecting any Ultra Modern coinage is certainly valid and not without merit and obvious facts. BUT......I do believe that we are on the precipice of a new frontier in coin collecting. In part, with the population of this country at heights never seen in our history, and doubling and tripling through the recent decades and fore casted to reach A BILLION people (like China was) in a few more decades. The mintage numbers actually will or already do reflect some of this. And the State Qtrs and now the ATB's are or have brought hundreds of thousands of new YN's into the hobby. And these "Ultra Modern" coins are generally DESPISED by hard core Classic collectors (and/or the older generations), who never have or never will have in any interest in them. It's these NEW kids who will change and drive this new direction of coin collecting to include these. Unacceptable to Classic collectors as this is....I believe it's the future of our sport that the Ultra Modern coins "will" be included and desired in collections for generations to come. The changes will be in ways that we can't even get our brains around yet, and will take paths that are unfathomable to us right now, I firmly believe.Maybe....just maybe, when we're all in our 90's, we'll get to see this happen, or begin to happen....and we'll probably get headaches observing this and will be scratching and shaking our heads about it...... (and my inheritors will be pleased that they'll have Classic AND what "was" Ultra Modern coins in the family)

eaglefoot, for the record I am one of the "YN", although I have been into the hobby since I could barely walk well before the State Quarters started. The US population will not reach 1 billion people for a very long time (if ever), and that wouldn't make a difference anyway. What I believe is that there are enough BU coins floating around that none of these modern issues will ever be worth anything. Right now there are probably 100 BU 2009 nickels for every person that wants to collect one...maybe more. That doesn't equal value. Value is an 1877 IHC, where we all want one, but none of us can even get our hands on one that doesn't break the bank or looks like its been run over by a train.

I'm in the Florida panhandle and I search about 5 nickel rolls a week and have not found any 2009 p or d yet. I guess they were just not released around here. I envy those of you that have found some.

I got a 2009 D nickel from coin roll hunting yesterday. I have 9 with the P mintmark and just 3 with the D mintmark. I hope to find some more of these.
