I met a man this past week, who has his fathers collection. He has a roll of 1970 S small date Lincoln cents. I looked through about half the roll and they look like they are small date coins. Weak "Liberty" high "7".
They are all red, but most of them have some spots, couple have finger prints. He has been to a few coin shops and no one knows what to offer him. He has seen the Red Book where they list a value of $65 each, I think that is for a MS 63 or 65 coin. I let him know he would not get anything near that much, but would try to come up with some kind of price.

I am hoping some of the experts would have a good idea what to offer for the roll.

He also has a roll of 1960 small date Lincoln cents, they seem to be much better grade.

Your friend might do better trying to sell them individually. Better looking ones would fetch a higher price, of course. Offer to sell them on ebay for him in turn for a few of the choice examples as payment for your services. I just think people expect rolls of coins to be at a wholesale rate anyway, and spotted coins will pull the value down too much overall.

Let us know what the end result is.

I would make an offer on both rolls for one price, that way he can assign whatever price to each roll in his own mind. Without seeing them it is hard to peg a price on them but I would say that 80% of the average condition of the lot would be fair. Just look at realized prices on ebay and make you call from there. What you need to express to him is that without some sort of discount you are doing charity work and just taking care of him. A middle ground is what is fair to both.

I have seen 70-S SD coins with spots or marks going for $25 each or so. Nicer 64/65 coins $40-50 and up. I think you could sell them pretty easily individually.

There is a roll on ebay right now and they are asking $2500:

None of his coins are probably worth $65, especially if they have spots or finger prints. I got a real nice one on ebay with no spots or prints for $36 shipped which was a great deal. Without seeing the actual coins it is kind of hard to put a price on the roll. Are there any coins in the roll that look fantastic with no spots or prints?

That roll on ebay is pretty cool, made two offers but both were automatically declined.

what did you offer jokingjoker? That price averages out to $50 a coin, which isn't too horrible, but it leaves no room for profit if you want to resell. that is an awesome roll though.

That roll on E bay does look pretty cool .. the coins look better grade than the ones I am looking at.

Doing searches on E bay, I don't see many that with bids. This roll could be a big gamble for who ever
buys it. I am thinking the better condition coins might sell well, but the ones with spot(s) or finger prints
someone could have them for years.

First offer $1000 second $1500. Both automatically declined. Would only buy for a quick flip so anything above that is out of my range.

You should be absolutely certain they are all small dates if you are considering a buy. If you were to purchase the roll, I bet you could liquidate a significant portion of them right here on the forum.

x3!

If I were looking to make a profit and if the majority of the coins had spotting, I wouldn't go much higher than about $1000. This is based on a conservative average sale price of $25 each which leaves $5 profit per coin.

After verifying each coin is a small date, I'd offer $1000 for the roll.
