What an awesome looking set you've got going so far. I'd not gamble $1200 for what might turn into a $50 coin. Keep scouring the auctions from HA and other high end rre coin dealers that offer weekly auctions. You can find an NGC or PCGS at some point. Although do you really want to crack such a rarity out of its case?

You better snag it before CousinCarl finds it lol. He has a set he's working on also.

to CCF! Awesome set so far. I'd rather be safe and pick up one already in a PCGS/NGC slab. Oh, and FYI just carl owns an excellent, gorgeous, and mouthwatering set of Unc FSB Mercs. He's even got the 1916-D in FSB Unc. He should chime in soon.

PCGS and NGC are super-strict with the FB/FSB designation on 1945's given the astronomical price difference. I wouldn't chance it without seeing it in person. I have a lot of experience with Mercury dimes too, so my eye is well -developed at identifying FB/FSB. I mean absolutely no offense when I say this; two months isn't enough time to develop an eye for what PCGS and NGC would consider a true FB/FSB 1945. It's your money, but I can tell you my money wouldn't gamble without a rock-solid return policy and having the seller cover return shipping costs.

As that being said that's why I was iffy about the PCI slab. I'm not a total noob...I was addicted when I was kid and literally read everything and anything I can about coins. I'm just 2 months back into the game now after taking a decades hiatus lol. I know my eye is probably not as keen as others but I do know what I want in a FB dime. I had my local dealer get mad with me because he was trying to sell me a 1935-s which he said had full bands, and it did look like it. Until you put a glass to the coin and see that there was one little gouge, hence causing a interruption in the "full band" line and I wouldn't buy it from him because of that...well lets just say I think he was trying to pull a fast one over on me. I can fare for myself on most cheap coins, but anything higher rarity/grade I'm going to have to buy PCGS and NGC.
Anyway can I see this set that everyone is talking about? Geez if I have this set for 10+ years its the only way I will be able to finish it. lol
Thanks for all the replies guys. Its good to see that I'm not the only crazy one with a FSB merc dime set!

Out of curiosity what type PCI slab is it? Is it the older green label 10 digit serial number?

Quote: You better snag it before CousinCarl finds it lol. He has a set he's working on also. And true, I'd grab that one. If you look into it, your chances of finding a 45 with better middle bands is almost a joke. I too have been working on a FSB set. I only have 6 more to go. Oddly enough that 45 and even the 16D were not the hardest ones to get. Just wait until you try to find a 42D/41 with FSB's. That is one I just can't find. My 45 is about like yours and if you can grab that one for that price, grab it fast or I will. I could always start a second FSB set you know.

I must have missed this thread when I was away from CCF for a few months - beautiful collection, you're doing really well! Good luck with that 1916-D FSB... of your 7070, too!

Thanks everyone! Yea sometimes I set my goals to a little bit of a unattainable level sometimes. But hey, this isn't going to be a 1 yr project. Like I said I just got back into it about 6 months ago after not doing anything for over a decade. (26 yrs old now). When I got started into collecting I remember I purchased my first gold krugerrand for under 400. Boy if only we all knew back then what we know now!
Anyway, the 7070 w/ gold page I just got into about a month ago. Just have all the common coins in Mint state. Trying to fill a lot of the gold up now.As long as the coins show a lot of detail that is what I'm after. Having a mint state 7070 is almost as crazy as a full band dime set. Oh well..ill knock one off at a time!

The 45 looks full split bands to me. which is very rare and worth much more than $ 1200 If it's a Mint state coin. Tony
