I used to have a proof liberty head nickel... it was only PF-61 but I kind of miss it... When I get a real job other than ebay the first coin I'm buying is another proof liberty head nickel. |

I stopped by a coin show Saturday and picked up a 1942 ICG PF66 Mercury dime (pictures to come later). Its definitely not a PF66 but it's a solid coin I'm thinking around a PF64. the best part is because of the holder I was able to pick it up for $100. There was a 1900 proof indian head but it Had a fingerprint right on his face. The price was really low but the fingerprint just killed the eye appeal. There was also proof Buffalo nickels, 2 cent pieces, 3 cent silvers, and a few Morgan's. I was actually suprised at the amount of classic proofs at the show. It may also be that they were in my mind and I was looking harder than usual. |

The experts debate as to when the first United States Proof coin was struck, but there is general agreement that the Philadelphia Mint started to produce Proof coins on a regular basis starting in 1858. Here is an 1858 Proof dime, which is as close as I am ever to going to get to an 1858 Proof set. The Stars Obverse dime is hard to find in Proof because it was only issued on a regular basis in 1858 and 1859. The Legend Obverse design was introduced in 1860. I am sorry. Photobucket has refused to allow me to down load the codes for pictures all day. I am really getting tired of this lousy second rate site that can't do its job. Does any one know of a better one?
