So I know a guy who recently told me that his dad bought a $50,000 coin. He didn't know any details other then that. It got me wondering, if I had 50 g's to spend on coins I would probably complete my Morgans, and my Buffs, and be well into a third or forth set of one thing or another.

BUT. If you had $50 grand on one coin, and only one coin, what would it be?

If you already have spent $50k on one coin.

My answer is I would buy whatever 1790's Bust Dollar I could get in MS.

1793 US Half Cent
This runs around 50,000 in the AU58 to MS61 range. If I had my arm twisted behind my back, and somebody gave me 50,000 to spend on one coin and had to pick one out, I think it would be the 1873 Half Cent.
I always wanted one myself.
It might be my favorite US coin, it is a 1 year type, low mintage, and the prices have been dropping lately.
Real case scenario, I'll never own one, I don't think in any grade, unless I was forced to buy it under those circumstances with somebody elses money.

As far as modern cents, one would think of the 1955 DDO. I want one but, how many could I get for $50k? (A: more than one)

My answer is a 1969-S 1C DDO in MS.

Never had $50,000 at all (in fact, my entire collection costs at least ten times less than that, and the US Classic part of my collection probably comes out to $200 or less).

But if I had to spend that much on one coin, I'd rather have it be a really large gold. So this, if it fits in $50,000, or maybe a Californian $50 slug (again, if it fits in $50,000). Or just ignore the US classics entirely and get a bullion kilogram from somewhere (should just fit in the money).

(If I had $50,000 to spend on an unlimited amount of coins, I probably won't buy much US classic at all. If I was limited to that category... probably also mostly gold, to be honest - something reasonably common from Charlotte and Dahlonega, and as much of the 7070 type set - including the gold page - as I can get for the remaining money.)

Since the limit is one coin it would come down to either a:

-- 1793 Liberty Cap, Head Facing Left Half Cent probably low AU
OR
-- 1796 Draped Bust quarter, Small Eagle Reverse probably XF

I need them both for my type set.
