On another thread I saw mention of classic US coin proofs. I had never really heard of them or known much about them. I think they look absolutely beautiful and want some for my collection. Which of the proofs are the cheapest and easiest to enter? I'm on a tight budget but want to put together a nice set and was wondering which ones to target to have a piece of history at the most affordable level.
Thanks

You can get: A proof Shield nickel (PR63 PR64) in the $300 - $400 dollar range. You can check out prices at numismedia. You can see all the proof price ranges for us classic coins.

As a group the classic coins (mid 1800s to early 1900s) are not all that rare for the most part. Usually the higher face value the higher the price. Small coins are not has popular, and the nickels and cents were often minted in the largest quantties. Try to buy pieces with original surfaces that have not been dipped, and at least look like they have not been dipped. They cost more, but you won't be looking to replacement them later if you budget grows and you REALLY get into collecting these coins. This piece as the general look that collectors find desirable.

That's a beautiful example Bill!
Someday I would also like to add some classic proofs to my meager collection.

Examine as many as you can and decide the "look" you like before buying. Buy only a major TPG coin, I suggest. For a combination of value and mid-size importance, I like Barber quarters and V-nickels.

I really like the walking Liberty proofs. While not as old as some of the other coins folks have posted, the WL proof is fairly affordable especially if you buy one from the early 40s.

Proofs are so beautiful! Ufff. It seems numismedia says the value of a Indian Head cent proof is $150? Is that a reasonable number? That might be the one classic proof I go for then

I have never seen a nice Indian head proof for anywhere near $150 but happy hunting and good luck.

I also like classic proofs, but for my one and only piece I decided to go for a Seated half, my avatar coin. These pictures are from the dealer- in hand the fields appear much cleaner and it has some nice light toning, but I can't really get a good picture myself. I think an IHC or a Shield nickel would be a good way to get into classic proofs, although I don't have experience with them.

Keep in mind that you can find many very nice examples with good eye appeal that are "only" graded PF61 or PF62 for a lot less than examples that are graded PF65 and above. I wouldn't even look at a modern proof that wasn't graded PF69 or PF70, but it's a whole different ball game with classic proofs. If you're just starting out and want to find some nice examples that you can afford, consider the following examples from my collection [together with what I originally paid for each coin]: [$550] [$725] [$450] [$450] [$300] Of all of these, the proof Liberty Head Nickel is probably the easiest and cheapest to pick up in nice condition.

Quote: You literally have the best collection I've ever seen. I am so impressed! Glad you like it! As I mentioned earlier, though, I made the decision to not worry about getting all high graded coins so I could actually afford them, and I'm sure there are people out there with much nicer collections. Of course, a large part of the time and effort spent on my proof collection was searching for "lesser" examples that still had great eye appeal.
