Sorry, I'm a clueless newbie. My nickel looks like it has a copper penny shape over the front.

It's environmental damage. It could be anything....chemical, salt water, acid.....pick one.

You are correct, in a way.

A cent Sat on top of the nickel for a long period of time. The cent protected the nickel from exposure.

That's why it looks better under where the cent was.

Thanks everyone! That's what I thought at first, but the edges of the discolored part are raised, and the copper color continues onto the coin edge. I could see if it were just that circle, but it goes in, then out (like a neck and shoulders), and the raised edge goes around the whole thing. I can't figure what could leave that impression!
