well, went through the rest of my $500 halves for the week, 1 64, and 9 40%. I found it interesting that I found about 8 91s that looked like they were straight from the mint.

Went to W. Virginia for Mothers Day to visit my darlings mom. Stopped at 5 small town banks along the way and purchased a total of 17 rolls of half dollars. Found 2 90% and 5 40%. Slowed the trip down but made it a lot more fun. Jim

I've yet to find a proof in 5 boxes. Just for clarification, are all proofs from the San Fran mint? I've only found one 1965 half that really looks different than the rest in apprearance, but it's a no mint (P). Thanks for helping out the new guy.

By decree of congress, there were no mint marks on US coins in 1965, 1966, and 1967. During those years, I believe the mint produced prooflike coins, but called them special mint sets.

Went through $40 in halves, but appeared that most were previously searched. Curses! I finally found a bank willing to order me halves though. I got $150 more coming my way tomorrow. Wish me luck!

I found the fewest ever last week in my box of halves, I would say at least 50 coins had a dang black line accross the front about an inch long! Why do you have to do that? Seriously, why can't you mark like the edge or something instead of basically destroying a nice coin? I had to vent. There were only 4 of 50 rolls w/ a silver coin in it. I guess that's better than nothing though huh?

Just searched $200 in halves, found one 40% silver and one 2000-S proof with circulation scratches on it. Are these circulated proofs of any special value? Maybe there should be an AP grade (Almost Proof!) to correspond with the AU grade!

After reading this thread I decided to do some halfs hunting, went to the bank today and got $200.00 worth of halves. So far I am through half of them and I have gotten: 2X 1964 1X 1966 4X 1967 2X 1968 2X1969 I thought I'd share a picture of one of the 64's. It's now the nicest 64 I have. Beginners luck anyways. That's a very nice 64. I got my $150 today, and it was again pre=searched. Grrrr, I am gonna have to drive to SF and beat whoever keeps sticking me w/ these senseless... But, on the bright side, I did a little bank hunting, and found a nice 66 in a roll. Probably didn't even pay for the gas I wasted though . Might not order from work for a while, let those guys halves go to someone else, but who knows. It is hard not to look at fresh halves every few days . Curse this addictive hobby!

I'm glad to hear that everyone is finding a few goodies. I get a good bit of pre-searched junk sometimes with a black dot on Kennedy's ear. I grumble and throw things when I see those, but it's never the whole box that are like that. I usually find some silver in the same boxes that contain some pre-searched junk.
This past week's $500 box was decent, but not great. I found four 67s, a 68-D and a 2006-S proof, which was quite a nice surprise! ~Jim

I've gotten the dot on Kennedy's ear, the black line through In God or We Trust, I've gotten all different color lines, I've gotten initials, I've gotten ones marked with nail polish, I've even gotten ones that were engraved.
As long as I keep finding keepers, I don't care that I'll inevitably also get coins that I've seen before. They get mixed up when they are rerolled and that is all that matters.
Now if I can figure out which banks are sending in the keepers, I wouldn't mind going straight to them and buying the bags out of their counters, that would be awesome.

sounds like you should camp out by a counter one day, not in a stalker kind of way :), but just to see if anyone comes in with a box full of old coin. That would make it well worth it!! I get my box of halves tomorrow, hopefully it will be better than the last one. I've still yet to find any proofs or anything later than 2002. That's what keeps me coming back though week after week!!

Aside from the 16 coin roll in one of my boxes, the highlights for this week are:
1967 Special Mint/Proof 1966 Special Mint/Proof 1964 Proof
and drumroll please.........1960 Franklin Proof with no noticeable bag marks and very few fingerprints that I plan to try to remove with acetone (absolutely no rubbing on this coin will be allowed)

Went to my local bank (the teller actually sets things aside for me). One of the elderly people in the nieghbourhood dropped off $35 in pennies, so she set them aside for me, hoping there was something good in them. It took me a while to go through, but there were almost no coins after 1989 in there (less than 50). Here's what I found:
6 Wheats, including two from the 1930s 6 Geo VI pennies (one from the 30's) and my personal fav: my second 1985 pointed 5 penny! (Took 2 years to find the first, then 4 weeks to find the second!)
Haven't been to any bank yet this week, so I'm going through withdrawal. :(
