Sheesh! The manager checks every roll for silver? That sucks. I mean, if I was a manager at the bank, I'd do that to, but I wouldn't let that fact reach the customer. Oh well, time to order boxes (since they're sealed) or time to find another bank.

you're right about the motherload- I went beack for $200 more in nickels and pulled out $9.25 in silver. even being charged %5 to recoin it I'm still way ahead of the game, plus I'm pulling 1965-1981. Tommorow morning I'm going to this other small bank that sercives lots of grandmas and I'm gonna buy a couple more $100 boxes. This is the most amazing thing! I was paying $12 to the $1 for pre-65....it doesn't take long to think about filling the truck bed with nickel boxes and how cool that could be- if the 5% pre65 holds up I'll be cashing in and buying Roman gold in no time!!

MasterG - I hope I'm wrong in misreading your post, especially since I'm the only one saying anything, but are you saying that out of $200 in nickels, you pulled out $9.25 in 1942-1945 silver War Nickels? That would be amazing and I'd congratulate you! But I get the feeling you are thinking all pre-65 nickels are silver. Like I said before, I hate and don't want to burst bubbles, but I also don't want you to be disappointed later on down the line. Hope I'm wrong, and best of luck.

hey I'm just wondering, in regards the rolls of coins from the feds, what are the odds of finding silver dimes, quarters, or nickels? I have searched over 2,000 dimes and have only gotten four from the first 5 dollar roll. that's it. :( not very fun(those were customer coins not reserve) what should I stick with? customer or federal?

mhetz Nickels are probably your best bet. The design has not changed and it's more difficult to tell the metal difference. Those silver nickels slip by unnoticed where the dimes and quarters get plucked out.
Have you tried searching half dollars? They don't circulate so silver can still be found in those as well.

Make sure to take them back to a different bank though. Not just different branches but a separate bank. This helps to ensure that you don't end up searching the same ones. Other than that, yes, just go in and ask them to order some for you (if they don't already have some).

Depends on your bank. Some have Fed rolls others have the ones in the clear wrappers. Odds also depend on your area. Rural areas tend to yield better results. The big cities tend to have been searched more.

Found a 1979 SBA and a 2000D Sac this weekend. What's so special? I found them in a roll of Loonies! Gotta go check the rim of the SBA, though. Also pulled a 1943D steelie from a roll. I never found one in all my years in the US, so of course I find one now that I live in Canada!

Went to the bank today and bought a 1979D SBA that they had, a couple rolls of prez dollars to tuck away, a box of nickels and a box of cents. It's been a while since I've done any roll searching. I'm excited to get going again! Will report my finds (if any) when I'm done.

I love roll hunting! I've posted my recent nickel finds in the box of nickels thread...but I used to search through cents a while back, and the two most interesting finds were a 1957 silver Rosey offcenter strike, a 1964 silver Rosey and a Mercury dime (can't remember the date off hand...but it was in pretty nice shape...EF I think). I also found a 1912 and 1914 wheatie...and that was going through about 5 boxes =) I wonder why the silver dimes get into penny rolls...interesting....
