Never had that much luck with halves. I only ever found 2 1964 halves and 15 40% halves. I'm trying to talk to the bank teller into ordering halves for me. I even promised not to bring em back. She said shell think about it so Ill know tomorrow if shes ordering any for me. (fingers crossed)
Im gonna pick up a box of nickels to look through tomorrow. Ill let yas know if anything good pops up for me. I did look through some nicks today and found a curved clip and a struck through. Other than that nothing great.

"She'll think about it" ?

1913-V: Sounds like you got a bank that feels like they're doing YOU a favor by dealing with them. I'd tell her either do it, or don't, but tell me now so I know whether to find a new bank or not. I say go find a bank that treats you like a customer. And rightly, reward them by using their products and services. My bank and the people who work there gladly order coin for me. And if they didn't, like treating me as if I'm bothering them, I'd find another branch or a totally different bank that would. Best of luck!

I just recently got into CRH and bought $1,000 in halves from BOA and another $500 in halves from Wachovia. However it seemed like they had both been searched even though BOA's was in a bag and Wachovia's was in a box. I should mention that several of the coins from BOA were marked by other hunters. Interestingly the BOA bag also had several guitar picks and a 1971 Mexican peso. Although I found a proof statue of liberty half dollar I found no silver coins in either batch. Is this just bad luck? I want to try again with another branch but would hate to get another batch of duds, does anyone have any tips?

I just started today with $50 in dimes and found one 1960. I was thinking about just asking the bank if they had rolls others had turned in and if so would they just sell them to me on an as is policy or not ?
either way I will continue to hunt because I am poor

Hey Guys,

Just signed up, but have been "lurking" for awhile.

I just bought a box of pennies today and $20 worth of Kennedys. This was my first attempt at CRHing. I've been wanting to take the first plunge but just hadn't gotten around to it today.

It's a great way to widdle away the time while at work. My boss thinks I'm nuts.

Well, out of 1/2 a box of pennies, I got 2 1/2 lbs of copper pennies vs. about 4 lbs of post 1982s. I found some semi key date wheaties.

Out of my first roll of Kennedys, I found a shiny 40%.

Not bad for my first official CHR expedition, I guess.

A friend of mine has offered to by the post 82 pennies as he's building a replica of a "log" cabin he saw as a kid at a Ripley's museum. Go figure...

Everybody needs a hobby. :)

The funny thing, the bank teller that I went to this week was the same person two weeks ago who gave me the hardest time. I didn't have enough time to get to my bank to cash my paycheck so I stopped in the bank where my company banks. Figured it would be lickety split. She was rather unpleasant to say the least.

This time it seems she didn't remember me. I had time to deposit my check at my bank, but I decided to stop by to see her. She asked me how I want the cash. I told her "anyway". Then I proceeded to tell her that I wanted a box of pennies, $20 in halves, $10 of the new Presidential dollars, and $10 in $2s.

I've never seen a teller get so flustered. She had to count my money 10 or 12 times to make sure she didn't screw up.

Perhaps this was payback for her unprofessionalism 2 weeks prior.

I get bankers treating me unprofessional all the time. I still remember the one bank lol
Banker: WHY SHOULD I GIVE YOU CHANGE ALL YOU DO IS BRING EM BACK.
Me: I take out the ones I want then I bring em back then I smiled at her.
Banker: (scoffed and walked away).
Strnage thing is I never had a problem with her again lol. And she still works there too. Now when I want change if she is waiting on me shell act politely and wait on me. If they dont have an extra box to give away Shell just say they dont have any extra to give out at the moment. I go to a different bank but same branch to order change. Now I cash my change at a different branch so I dont get the same ones back.
So I guess the moral of my story is that bank tellers shouldnt complain because banks are suppose to support and help coin collectors. So if the teller complains shes in her wrong career.

Here's an idea that I came up with after going through my first 2 rolls of halves which I picked up last week on a whim.... I mark the back of each one with a red permanent marker. This way, in case I ever get them back again I'll know it was mine.

I only got 1 40% out of the 2 rolls and 4 '76ers.

I was going to go to Commerce and "dump" them in the coin arcade. I had them on my desk in work and it created a buzz. My supervisor wanted some. My coworkers were lining up to buy them from me. I should charge a premium for them!

My coworkers were telling me how rare they were. Then I whipped out my $2 bills. One woman told me she was going to put the $2 I gave her in a frame and save it for her grandkids... that she doesn't have yet. I was tempted to tell her that it would probably be worth $2 by the time her grandkid was born and come of age. I dared not spoil her dreams of riches! :)

And, yes, I do work with a bunch of ignorant idiots, in case you were wondering, except one guy who is an old time coin collector. He got a kick out of the "buzz" in the office.

Just thought I'd share. LOL

Hello- I learned about roll searching here, my first try with $100 in nickels pulled $5.40 in pre-'65. I'm stoked! I'm getting more, plus dimes and quarters- what a cool thing! I used to pay $$$ over face value for pre-'65 change!

Thanks Forum!

Today I did $200 in nickels and $200 dimes, nickels own the day so far as I pulled another $10.40 of silver, NOTHING on the dimes they were all new. The lady at the bank is starting to give me a hard time and said there would be a fee to buy a box. Can a bank sell currency over face value? I'm gonna bank shop and see who doesn't think I'm a pain in the butt to deal with- but I'm HOOKED on roll searching BIG TIME!! I may need to load my pickup truck with boxes of nickels and see what I come up with and to see how long it would take me to sort through a truck of nickels, any guesses?

Thanks Again for turning me onto a new hobby!

If you have an account with a particular bank......they wouldn't charge you a "fee"......but any other bank can most certainly charge you one. It's not that they can "sell you currency over face value"....but it's their money that they can charge for "processing" the coins you take or dump there. They incur a cost from ordering these coins from the Fed Res. or wherever and they have armored truck shipments, employee time, etc. etc. to pay for.......so you can see if a "non-member" wants some of their coins......they have a right to charge you a "fee" for taking them, if they decide to sell you them at all !

You have to remember that the banks are charged a fee when they order boxes of coins from Brinks or whoever the subcontractor is who they order coins from. They also pay a fee to send back coins in bulk bags. That's why if you have a drop bank they may require you to have an account to deposit the coins into. Business wise it comes down to how much the bank makes off of the accounts of you as a customer compared to how much you cost them with ordering boxes or taking bulk coins back to them that is more than they hand out to their commercial customers. It's all business.

You pulled $10.40 of silver out of $200 in nickels? Are you sure about that? If so, you pretty much hit the motherload or you ran into some WWII veteran who had their change jar cashed in. Don't want to burst your bubble, but I'd double check this. I hope I'm wrong. If so, congrats and that's amazing! Best of luck.

Welcome to CRH'ing! It is a pretty fun hobby. After searching through many a box and roll, I do have to say though that defacing the coins is kind of not cool, IMO. Others could probably better put why into words, but when I look through coin, I think its sad to see such beautiful coins permanently ruined and won't longer be enjoyed by others. What if there are others who want to start collections or just want to look at it? And it makes it that much easier for other people to find what YOU are looking for!

Plus, I've found that there really is no point doing this as even if you do get your own coins back, now what are you going to do? You find out after you already open them, so there is no way to avoid it. I never find a whole box or roll or even two similarly defaced coins next to each other. Which means they are well spread around. I don't know exactly how coins are collected and re-rolled by the fed or whoever rolls them, but it certainly occurs to me they are pretty mixed up by the time I get them.

I think we are lucky to be able to find coins that are 40 - 100 years old still in circulation and can still be enjoyed by generations after us. I can't tell you how great it was to find the 1908 Indian Head cent that I did a month ago or so. But it would have definitely sucked if some early 20th century person decided to mark it up, you know?

Just my thoughts, no offense meant. Best of luck.

I love to go roll hunting. I was finding about 1 silver half every roll. Then I had to stop because I could not get any rolls.
One of the banks was bought by another and decided that people that bring in rolls need to unroll them so they put it right in a counter.
The other bank I was going to found out that there was silver in some rolls and the manager decided to go through every roll before letting anybody have them.
