Quote: Since I have never met a coin I have yet to sell or flip, my hubby and I are realistic about purchasing special sets. As much as we may want to flip, the reality is that these are for our enjoyment so it really does not make sense for us to purchase extras since they will just sit there.
There is no debate for us - we are collectors so we just buy what we enjoy taking into consideration whether or not the price works for us. Well, don't get me wrong -- I am not a flipper either. In fact, barring unforeseen financial emergencies down the road, I plan to hold onto my 25th anniversary sets until I can either hand them down to my son or, if necessary, sell them off during my retirement years (still a good 20+ years away). Either way, though, the only reason I bought multiple sets was because I was sure they'd make great long-term investments due to the interest and low mintage. There aren't many things I'm sure about when it comes to investing, but this was one of them.

For those who are looking at extra sets as an investment the best bet may be to order the set for yourself first, then wait till the last week for extras. Before getting extras I would suggest checking the sales figures. If the montage is still low or reasonable it could end up being worth it. If the montage is high I would pass. Of course it's still a risk as others may still have the same plan but at least that was you can know to pass if the mintage is already very high

Mach1, I don't see where it says anything about packaging on that link you supplied.
But I really liked that 25th Anniversary OGP, so no complaints here if it's true! Although that will probably jack the price up another 35 bucks.

I think it is a given that there will be MANY orders for this set even with the assumed high mintage. Another way you can approach it is order what you want for yourself and also place and order for "extras". You can always cancel the "extras" order before they ship. That way you are covered in case the "mint to demand" is a smokescreen for an already determined limit.

Until the Mint mentions what the limit is on the set, we don't know if it really will increase in price or not. If the 2011 set had a mintage of 500,000 or more, it would NOT be worth anywhere near what it is today.

I'm also dreading what nonsense will be foisted upon us by the TPGs this time around. Will they require that sets be sent in unopened packages in order to get the special "75th anniversary" label? Will they have special "first strike" designations for an extra fee? Will you get a special letter signed by a former mint official for an extra fee?
As I discussed in another thread, all of these shenanigans may have been worth it if you had a set that was lucky enough to get graded at MS70/PR70. Anything less than that was most likely a colossal waste of money since the raw sets in OGP are currently just as valuable as an MS69/PR69 set.
With this set, however, I'm not so sure. Given the potentially high mintage, I suspect the only sets that will appreciate significantly in value will be those that are graded. MS70/PR70 sets will obviously be worth the most, but even MS69/PR69 sets will likely be worth significantly more than raw sets in OGP. In other words, grading may be the only thing that makes these sets even remotely "rare."
Ah well. As I said, I'll definitely be getting one set for my collection, since I just adore reverse proofs. Probably won't be getting multiple sets for long-term investing, though.
