Quote: Well that may be a BIT high. These are not $30 mint sets. The $120 or so price will limit the normal people. I would venture a guess at 800-900k which, as I said before, would be FANTASTIC for the 2011 RP's out there. With the way they are being minted I would be very happy with anything under a million. My guess was more based off of some of the bigger dealers putting in very large orders for their stock which is my biggest concern for the minting number.

Doesn't anyone out there think this unlimited mintage of an anniversary set is a bad idea!! To the true collector this set will have no more that bullion value if there's 1 million sets. I think the US Mint should have a subscription option for anniversary sets purchases(just like for proofs sets, etc.) for the regular collector/subscribers. Then set a mintage limit with a household limit. This seems fair and you limit the amount to those who just want to flip the coins to make a quick buck!

simon I agree it is a terrible idea. I like the coins so I will get it but lost some enthusiasm when they announced unlimited mintage. Part of the fun is having the hard to get coin, and this does not qualify unless people stay away because of it.
I missed out on the 2011 set, but would rather miss out and hunt for one than just have as many as possible out there. I am hoping that the final number ends up reasonable, but am expecting the worst

It is hard to say if the value will drop with a large mintage, like 800k or so. Look at the 2001 Buffalo Commem that sold out and it is still going up in value. That is a very popular commem and demand is lifting up the price. The same thing could happen to this one?
There is only a 4 week buying window, so I bet some people will still miss out, that want to buy one.
And I think it'll be around $120 - $130, since the single one is going for ~$60.

2001 Buffalo mintage was only 227,000 for the MS and 272,000 for the proof

Technically, this release is not an anniversary set, nor is it meant to commerate the SF mint as first thought. The mint director has already stated this, though I can't site right off-hand where I read it at. In my opinion, this release (and the unlimited mintage) is a move to make up for the complaining over the 25th anniversary sets.

Since the OGP for this set looks like a "mini-me" of the 25th Anniversary OGP, I hope the mint boxes them for shipping better this time? Maybe a sheet of foam inside the coin box to prevent the coins from escaping!
I had a box of 5 of the anniversary sets, and had coins loose in every box.

I thought I read on the US mint site that production would be based on demand, that (to me) means oversaturation unless no one orders them, by the way; will it be available to individuals from the mint site or just to bullion dealers? Scanning the posting it appears that it may be limited to bullion dealers.

Yes, oversaturation unless no one orders them because they fear oversaturation, which would mean undersaturation. Unless people figure that nobody will buy them due to fear of oversaturation and try to corner the market by buying a lot, which could then lead to oversaturation. In other words, there's no way to predict. And no, the sets will be available directly to the public. The bit about bullion dealers is just a standard link on any page dealing with ASE coins.
