A Grand Exchange: New Yorkers Invited to Grand Central Terminal to Exchange Currency for First Presidential $1 Coin
United States Mint Puts First Presidential $1 Coin into Circulation in Time for Presidents Day
WHAT: As Presidents Day approaches, New Yorkers will get a chance to experience big change coming to the country. The United States Mint will release the first Presidential $1 Coins into nationwide circulation on Thursday, February 15, 2007. Kicking off at Grand Central Terminal, New Yorkers may exchange their currency for the first George Washington $1 Coin.
Developed for commerce and collecting, the new George Washington $1 Coins are a fun way to educate and raise awareness of America's first President - just in time for Presidents Day.
The George Washington $1 Coin is the first design in the series that will feature each of the country's former Presidents on a golden-colored coin. Four new designs featuring American Presidents will be introduced each year in the order of their service, with John Adams, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison to be released later in 2007. A stunning depiction of the Statue of Liberty will be on the other side the coin. For the first time since the 1930s, coin inscriptions such as "E Pluribus Unum" and "In God We Trust" will be prominently inscribed on the edge of the coins.
The new George Washington $1 Coins will be circulated throughout the country beginning Feb. 15, 2007. Financial institutions and retail businesses are participating in the program. Schools and educators nationwide will be championing the new Presidential $1 Coins with curriculum programs and other educational efforts. Consumers can visit
