finally got on to the Mint site to place my order for the Proof dollar

1st point is thee is an error on the site and my order shows that each set is on $0.01 US each and I have a confirmation email from the mint to prove it.

Called their customer service and they have now realized there is a problem with their site.

Second the mint is issuing proofs in sets of 4 so the subscription sets will come out once a year with 4 proofs in each set.

I wonder who the brain trust was who thought this up

If anyone has any further information - I certainly am interested

My thought for the US Mint for the day is

New update from the mint

" United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set™ Subscription: One Unit (MJ1)

Sign up now! The current price for one (1) United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set™ is $14.95 per delivery.

The official United States Mint Presidential $1 Coin Proof Set™ contains the four new Presidential $1 Coins. Proof coins are extraordinarily brilliant with sharp relief and a mirror-like background. Their frosted, sculpted foregrounds give them a special "cameo" effect, created by the exacting proofing process. Proof blanks are specially cleaned, polished and treated to ensure high-quality strikes. The blanks are then fed into presses fitted with hand-polished dies and struck at least twice to ensure sharp, high relief. The coins are then packaged in presentation cases to showcase and preserve their exceptional finish.

You will receive this set and all future sets annually until at least 2016. You can choose to cancel at anytime. Price is subject to change without notice."

rggoodie-Richard:

This US Mint subscription site looks all messed up, as the Proof sets; Silver or clad & the Mint sets, do not list the Presidental dollars (i.e., Dead Guys $-DG$1), in the sets, I would wait until they correct this information. & Buy the Silver proof set & Mint sets & get all the good stuff. This ia s US Mint marketimg gimmic, List all the individual sets first, then the combo set in the July 2007 time frame, & get you to pay more money on the individual sets.

sorry ronaldb112 I haven't been around but I see you got the answer of how I ordered my proof set. It was a subscription they are offering for now and will ship later. Funny but most people here in Montana seem to know about the new dollars and so far all the banks I have checked with have them!!

Drycreek:

Thanks,

These Presidential dollars into the bank are a funny thing, my main home is in Chicago NW Burbs, & none of my banks are carrying the Dollars. But, during the work week, I am down in Rural Indiana & the companie's local credit union is carrying them & selling them at face value. I may go over at lunch & buy some.

Folks:

Guys:

Our company credit union down here in Very Rural Indiana decided to obtain & sell the GW-DG$1 at face value $1, so I got a couple.

BTW: Looking at them; the incuse design is weird, very hard to read w/o a 10X loop. & GW looks angry. The rev Liberty stamping looks great, but on both sides in non image area, the coins metal looks mottled.

My Chicago banks still are not carrying them.

I've got two of the mottled versions in two rolls.
Is that oxidation of some type?

Edix:

I think it is some type of oxidation, I will know more when I get home & put under a microscope. Here is the metal compostion of the alloy:

88.5% Cu 6% Zn 3.5% Mn 2% Ni

The Mn is the most reactive metal & should create the "tarnish".

Early on, the US Mint said they would coat the coins to prevent the tarnish, but wrt to the minting procress, they would have to spray or dip coat after the stamping & then dry the coin/film. I have not heard the material composition of the coating or if they are even doing it.

My bank is a branch of a national chain. I called yesterday to ask if they had the new $1 coins - but got routed to a call center, where I was told the banks couldn't release the coins until the 16th. Went to the bank today to see if they did have them, and was told, "No, but we will order some next week. We didn't even know before yesterday that we could order them, but a lot of people have come in to ask for them." They order coins on a Tuesday and get the order delivered on a Thursday. They recommended I come in Friday next week.

Sawmill, same here. Bank of America pretty much told me the same thing, and they are on the same schedule. I know of another bank that does have them, so I may stop in there, but it is out of my way per say. I'll probably wait until my bank gets them as I am the only one to even ask about them. I could have the entire 1K box to myself

I checked with my credit union. What a worthless opperation! For the heck of it I went there yesterday and they told me they don't have the dollars and also said they wouldn't be getting any. I wonder if it would be worth opening an account at Chemical Bank or Bank One and just keep enough money in your account to keep it open. Then you could go in and get new coins.

After hearing all the reports about the coins and how hard it seems to be to obtain them I have decided not to collect these. I think my collecting dollars can be spent better elsewhere. I was kind of excited about it at first but have quickly lost any interest in it. Better to find that out now than 6-7 years down the road.

Looks like I am going to have to count on forum members to get both the P and D Presidential dollars for my friends in Europe as there is NO WAY I am paying a premium at the Mint or on ebay for these dollars. The banks in this area refuse to pay face value to get them in here so I will be hollering "Where's George" for quite some time!!!
