There seems to be a lot of interest in the gold Kennedy. This interest can be a double edged sword. A lot of people interest and a mint to order product will mean that there are a lot of coins out there and the quantity will drive prices in the secondary market. There may be short term profits to be made but in the long run there will be no scarcity for the coin. That's why I purchased the First spouse coins with the possibility of scarcity of coins increasing the value of the coins in collections.

If the coins are held for the long term then prices will reflect the scarcity of the coins. Sure the series is out of favor now,

So I can understand the concern of those who worry about the mint to demand marketing of the mint. So hopefully all can get what we want - scarcity and coins.

I have said it before. Coins are a TERRIBLE investment. I hope that so many are ordered that there will never be a chance of the gold Kennedy ever going for more than the spot price of gold. That raises the possibility that I might actually get one for a reasonable price in the future if gold prices plummet, which I hope they do. That's just me, though. To each his own.

My instinct is that one will be able to pick these up on the secondary market at a price lower than what the mint sells them for. Plus let's face it, it is considered an unattractive design and the planned mintages are fairly high. An alternative would be the low mintage 1st spouse coins -- and yes they are unattractive also, but many of the mintages are under 10,000 and can be less expensive on the secondary market than from the mint - with a small premium over gold melt.

am predicting that the Mint will be selling the gold Kennedy for around $1269.95

As I posted about a week ago, if spot gold stays where it is ($1300-1350) the price WILL be $1277.50. Not a guess...fact

I do, not because I don't love it, but because I probably can't afford it.

I really hope that they use the thirty day ordering window instead of mintage limits. As an actual collector, I am getting really tired of taking the afternoon off, to spend on the mint's website, trying to battle the hoards of flippers who come out of the woodwork to scoop up the majority of the limited mintage, every time a special set comes out. (2011 ASE; HOF Gold coins)

My thoughts exactly. Absolutely going to order the silver set. No way I'll be able to afford the gold coin, so better to pretend like it doesn't even exist for me. Which is sad - I'd love one.

ANA announces safety procedures
for U.S. Mint purchases at the 2014 World's Fair of Money

The American Numismatic Association today announces the following public-safety procedures for collectors who wish to buy the dual-dated 50th anniversary Kennedy gold proof coins that will go on sale at the Chicago World's Fair of MoneySM, to be held in Rosemont, Illinois, on Aug. 5-9.

The U.S. Mint previously announced that 500 Kennedy coins per day will be sold at the show, and in order to purchase a coin, a buyer must receive a ticket from the U.S. Mint. The line for receiving tickets will form outside of the bourse floor at 8 a.m. each day of the show. There will be signs on site to guide collectors to the correct area. Mint officials will distribute tickets to the first 250 people in line between 10:30 and 10:45 a.m. each day. At 11 a.m., collectors with tickets will be led onto the bourse floor through a special side entrance that will take them directly to the U.S. Mint booth to complete their purchase.

Collectors are reminded that proper credentialing is required to enter the convention hall at the World's Fair of Money. Collectors who are not credentialed will be asked to leave the ticket line. The public registration desk will open Tuesday through Saturday, Aug. 5-9, starting at 8 a.m. Registration is required to receive credentials. ANA members who registered for the show online before the July 15 pre-registration deadline will receive their credentials via U.S. mail before the show.

The U.S. Mint previously announced that collectors under the age of 18 will not be allowed to purchase the Kennedy coins on site at the show. Collectors will not be allowed to hold spots in line for others.

Daily public admission is $6 for non-members and free for ANA members. A $2 off coupon is available for free at WorldsFairOfMoney.com.

The World's Fair of Money is the nation's premier money show, featuring the most expansive educational programs and best numismatic inventory of any summer show. The show features more than 1,100 numismatic dealers; major auctions by Heritage Auctions and Stack's Bowers Galleries; the ANA's signature Museum Showcase, exhibiting some of the world's most valuable and beautiful coins and paper money; the Collector Exhibits area; as well as educational presentations and seminars. Show hours are 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, Aug. 5-8, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 9. For more information, go to WorldsFairofMoney.com.

The American Numismatic Association is a congressionally chartered nonprofit educational organization dedicated to encouraging people to study and collect money and related items. The ANA helps its 25,500 members and the public discover and explore the world of money through its vast array of education and outreach programs, as well as its museum, library, publications, conventions and seminars. Well it sounds like they have changed the rules again, and we are back to having a line at a known location. But this time the line is OUTSIDE the bourse floor so the dealers and early birds that get in early don't have a monopoly on getting in the line before the collectors have a chance. And you can bet that line will formed and long well before the coins go on sale. Probably at 8 AM as soon as people get their credentials. possibly even earlier for those who preregistered and get their credentials before opening day. That first 250 people who get tickets will probably already be in line even before 8AM

Yeah I changed my mind on buying the gold coin. Like someone else said, I'll wait and perhaps the market will be flooded with them after a while.

I guess the question is whether the coin will have enough numismatic value to maintain the 30% markup over bullion. I'm a bit suspect myself.

The United States Mint on July 31 lowered the number of gold Proof 2014 Kennedy half dollars from two coins per customer to one per customer at the ANA convention. The same limits will be imposed at all Mint retail outlets.

The United States Mint on July 31 lowered the number of gold Proof 2014 Kennedy half dollars customers may individually purchase at the American Numismatic Association convention and Mint retail units from two coins per customer to one per customer.

In addition, the Mint will double the number of tickets it will hand out per day from 250 to 500. Customers will need a ticket to be able to obtain one of the coins.

According to Tom Jurkowsky, head of the Mint's Office of Corporate Communications, "It's the right thing to do."

The Mint's press release follows:

"Because of the expected overwhelming response, dialog with our customers and many others interested in the 50th Anniversary Kennedy Half-Dollar Gold Proof Coin, the United States Mint is reducing the over-the-counter purchase limit to one unit per customer.

"This change in the purchase limit will give more members of the public an opportunity to purchase this popular coin, essentially doubling the number of customers able to purchase it. The number of units available at each retail location (Philadelphia and Denver facilities, Washington, D.C., headquarters and Chicago ANA World's Fair of Money) will remain the same. There will be 500 units available initially at each United States Mint location (Philadelphia, Denver and Washington) and an additional 100 units per day for the first three days after the product launch. There will be 2,500 at the ANA, 500 available per day of the convention.

"The household ordering limit of five will remain the same."
