Worth to check....
Wish I had budget:
1989 Canada MAPLE LEAF GOLD SILVER PLATINUM PROOF SET
1oz Silver, 1/10oz Gold, 1/10oz Platinum
They priced it $550, because "capsules scuffed, coins OK"
I think, it very good price.

Quote: @CC-Ottawa I saw that SD as well they also had another on same page for $219 out of stock. Yeah they have the pictures mixed up on those two listing. The enamel one for $219 and the non-enamel for $27.95 makes sense.

Step right up and get your bag of coins, only $190. You find out when you get them. 30% off.

Did something similar at the last auction I bid on a lot.. only had the title didn't show any of the coins....
The way I figured... mystery bags can be a bit of fun... as long as you get value.
The price point.. well that's up to each individual's own thresh hold. If I said to you I'd sell you a mystery bag of 10 coins for $5 ... would you think ... (meh not to much to risk?) Then you don't mind if you burn $5 as long as you have had a bit of fun... and perhaps find some value in the coins that are there.
This can be the same thing ... just a bit bigger scale.. I know one guy that bet 1 million on which of 3 sugar cubes a fly was going to land on... (what I'm trying to get at is that for some people.. it's just $$$ and they don't care... wish I was in that position.. but newp!)

Hey I know I will be bidding 50 USD or less for the Great Lakes Michigan coin. At this rate, if they keep slashing prices will go even lower.
I still stand by my statement that the hobby is suffering fatigue. By the time most world mints catch on, it will be too late for them.
Sure, they will continue to make coins but that doesn't mean things are OK.

How much mark up is on these coins anyways, I am starting to think this amount of mark up is seriously over the top.

Quote: How much mark up is on these coins anyways, I am starting to think this amount of mark up is seriously over the top. Based on forum discussions, big dealers seem to get 30%, possibly more. Smaller dealers 10 or 20%, depending on the volume of coins they order. So even at $1999, Colonial Acres is not losing a lot of money. But the coin collector is hard pressed to get back issue price if he decides to sell.

Only few 1oz RCM Proof Gold Coins were sold through ebay. So it is difficult to find current market prices on RCM's 1 oz Gold Coin. But USD$1600 to buy 1oz RCM Proof Gold Coin with mintage 500 is a sure bet.

Sure, they will continue to make coins but that doesn't mean things are OK. This negativity is really starting to get to me. Buy coins, admire them and be happy. I'm suffering fatigue from this sort of post. I really hope you find that Lake Michigan coin soon.

SilverDon, I think Yup's main idea here: wait for more, track your coin, and buy it for low. As per prices - nothing really holds the value and not suppose to be. Since item sold - it valuable for owner only.

I agree Silveroid, and Yup is trying to get the coin at as low a cost as possible - it is a smart way to go. But the constant complaining that the hobby is in trouble, that our collections are not worth 1/2 of what we paid, that the future of coin collecting is in trouble, I find it very pessimistic and it is starting to bother me. Everyone has the ability and choice to buy coins or not, no one is forcing us to buy coins, the Mints offer what they think will sell and they react to the purchasing habits of coin collectors. We see lower mintages on issues lately. Different designs, that appeal to some but not others, it is a niche market.
I purchased the Lake Michigan coin with the set and enjoy it. I don't lament the fact that it sells for less than issue. I wish it was not the case, and I wish all my coins would triple in value but that is not realistic. I am buying the Group of Seven at a discount and the O'Canada 2013 1/2 ounce set, why because I like them, I will never be able to sell them for issue, and I will get a good price for coins I like.
I believe you said it well when you noted- " I believe, people should forget the long time investment here and concentrate on the value of personal appeal."

@SilverDon I could not agree more. As a newbie to the hobby it has been quite discouraging to read the many doom and gloom posts. If one wants to invest, buy silver, gold, real estate or stocks. Myself, I am quite happy with the purchases I have made and I am fully aware that I will not get reimbursed the purchase price when selling the coins. I am not buying coins to flip them, I am buying them to collect-to be a part of the hobby.
