I always tell my customers that if they like the coin, they'll get enjoyment out of it, and it's fairly priced to market, then buy it. People spend 50 bucks on a trinket to stick on their fireplace mantle only to dispose of it at a garage sale 2 years later for a dollar. Somehow we've been brainwashed that if it's a coin, it needs to appreciate in value. If you're buying modern coins for investment in mind, buy bullion coinage. Your risk and odds of success are much better. Reality is that 90% of RCM NCLT products will diminish in value over time to their metal content. Most dealers today are paying silver value for many older RCM product (with some exceptions). As far as gold coinage, I haven't sold a secondary market Canadian Gold NCLT coin for more than 5% over spot in a long time. Reality is that just because you paid 60% of what the coin sold for at the mint last year, doesn't make it a "steal". You paid what the market values the coin at today. Furthermore, in the widely visible online world today, you've created a price precedent for that coin. When people buy coins, They look at that precedent and often determine value.

Agree, SilverDon
nothing to add

P.S. : for the new collectors some discounts very enjoyable to "get in". Go7....don't care that CA sells it for 500, while I bought the case separate, and by mistake bought twice (from dealer) the "Guardian"

Well then why are you guys buying from the mint right away when you can get for a discount later sounds pretty stupid to me you, and you can still enjoy it maybe even more so knowing that you got it for a reduced price. Only makes sense to wait for them but wait you guys don't care about saving money here you only want to enjoy the coin at all costs or high cost as it seems.

Elk, The same reason why people walk into a car dealership and buy a new car. There is nothing wrong with it. I buy a new car every 4 years and I lose my shirt on it every time. But I just love that new car smell and well worth the experience to me...Irrelevant of the cost.

Honestly, you right.
But just I for example need to have it fresh - otherwise, do not need it.
In addition I haven't learn to save the money. I know how to waste or not to buy at all, but I do not have "smart buying habits".

This is perfect example.
You forgot to mention "to do the maintenance at the dealer place, irrelevant of the cost"

Blah , buy what you like, NCLTs are not going anywhere any time soon, just some changes inevitably will come, Companies/Merchants adjust to the market changes , nothing new, been going on for hundreds if not thousands of years.

Buying from ebay - months later or years later...who knows how items have been handled, hence the desire of many to go freshly minted from the Mints...

You send it back if you don't like it.

I've bought many hundreds of items on ebay (mainly coins)only once did I return an item.

Electrum, that's exactly why I buy directly from the mints. Very fussy about how coins are handled.

Buying directly from RCM can also have unintended advantages when it comes to popular (sold out) coins.

I buy coins because I like them but I did get lucky and hit home runs with:
1999 Nunavut Mule (5 sets)
2005 Enameled Silver Dollar (Canada Flag)
2007 Swarovski Blue Snowflake $20
All the earlier 25¢ Bird series

Coins are a hobby for me, not an investment tool. The only people that are gonna make money off my collection are my heirs.

I honestly think the reason you two find these points negative is because you dont like facing the reality that this hobby is suffering... and you would prefer to ignore the hard facts... at least thats the impression you give me.

I realize my opinion is not liked or appreciated.. but its the real truth,, these depressed prices are hurting the hobby.

Prices for individual coins are not all depressed but some are. I agree Yup that seeing a flash sale for a coin that I've purchased for 2/3 or sometimes 1/2 the issue price is difficult. I buy a few directly from the mint when I want them right away, it keeps my MC status and gives me free delivery on all orders, not a bad discount on it's own. With coins of $20 or $30 there is not much chance that a huge discount is going to come by way of third party dealer as the added delivery charge will blow away the discount. With larger coins $20 - 1 ounce coins I wait usually for them to go on sale. I didn't wait for the Great Lakes set because I liked it right off the bat and wanted the box and the added ease of the sub, again boosting the MC status.

But where is it that the hobby is depressed. On-line sales makes everyone a seller. There has never been a time with more access to inventory. Deals are flying everywhere. People in remote areas are able to have coins shipped. I can't see it as being depressed. I see the prices being depressed for some NCLT, and TPG coins are at ~70% of trends or less, but old and new innovative coins are being purchased on a daily basis at great volumes. We are seeing all kinds of new coins made daily it seems, and this is seen to be over-saturating the markets, but hey, with great supply comes good pricing, you know that as a trader. I am sniping deals left and right. Getting older RMC coins at 50% of issue and knowing that this is the new norm does not make me nervous for the the state of the hobby. It tells me that dealers want to turn stock into cash so that they can turn it over again. Stale inventory, that's what is being discounted and converted into cash.
