I agree with ending presidents on our currency. Other countries have moved to adding historical figures onto their currency, we should consider following. If we moved to figures other than politicians, perhaps a new generation of collectors would become interested and start collecting.
I think changing the currency would be a good idea. I like Reagan and Teddy both, but want other people on my money.

No. I would not support a $2 coin or $200 paper bill no matter who was posted on them.
Neither item would be of any logical use in the U.S. monetary system.
We should: 1) eliminate cents 2) eliminate nickels 3) eliminate fifty-cent pieces 4) eliminate $2 bills
Perhaps the only change I think should be made is that when (and if) the Reagan $1 coin is made, it should be kept as the ONLY dollar coin to be reissued at the same time as the $1 paper bill is eliminated. The Reagan coin might be the only one that would have any interest for non-collectors to use daily for retail purchases. Also, make it a silver colored coin, not gold, and a little larger.

If either of these ever came to fruition, they would quickly follow the paths of their predecessors...the $0.02 cent & $0.20 pieces.
Neither lasted 10 years.

Quote: jbuck...you forget, you cannot kill the 5 cent piece several steps prior to the elimination of the quarter. Sure we can. Quote: Both need to be done at the same time, so making change continues to work. Ideally we just stop minting the nickel and not bother with withdrawing them from circulation. I chose that order so we would not have to wait for ATB Round 1 to end before stopping the nickel. Quote: 20 cent introduction would possibly be required. So that making change for a half dollar for a 10 cent purchase requires two coins, as opposed to 4. We could easily change Phase 2 Step 5 to be a reintroduction of the Twenty Cent coin. Good points. I did say it was up for discussion! Quote: Or we could just admit that inflation is more than the government acknowledges and eliminate everything below the half dollar. Which would eliminate the stupid $9.95 and $9.99 price tags. It always bothers me. Just make it $10. (And while you're at it, just call it $10.50, taxes included, make life easier)

CSOTUS,
I agree we should not add more presidents to our money. Most were just power hungry politicians. I think someone like Martin Luther King would be good.

Well, if we can add people like Martin Luther King on a coin or bill, I'm sure we could add someone like Balto the sled dog on a coin or a bill. After all, who says that the figure must be "human" to be put on a coin or a bill? Adding Balto would open up many selfish people's minds who think humans are the only species on the planet who are important. Balto saved many lives doing a serum run from Anchorage Alaska to Nome Alaska to cure a dyptherhia outbreak and save a lot of lives. Now just because Balto is a dog, and not a human, does not mean he was not a hero, who actually saved lives, we as humans, owe it to our canine companions for sticking with us through thick and thin. I would like it if they would also replace the boring old Bald Eagle with say, a Grey Wolf, or North American Red Fox or some wild North American canine, to show that we respect the relatives of the dogs/animals that actually served us.

Well, there has certainly been no problem having real people on commemorative coins and in a thematic series like the Presidential dollars.

We could just admit that the Canadians did things correctly. Introduce the dollar coin with a singular design so people will spend rather than collect/hoard. Soon after, eliminate the dollar bill. Continue with the $2 bill for another 6 years or so until people warm to the idea of coins, then in 2021 introduce the $2 coin with the good ol' Peace design. It's what we all wish for, and I think the best classic coin design (although the Kennedy half is essentially the Peace obverse without a tiara). The Canadian $2 coin specs are pretty much spot on, but we can't use it because the exchange rate is pretty far off at the moment. Then eliminate the penny. The nickel is fine as a coin but perhaps a change in metal would do it good. I like the clad $20 coin idea. Or! We could introduce new "golden" coins in the same size and denominations as the gold coins of yore. But then today's golden dollars would likely be passed off as $20 or $10 coins. I don't know how close in size they are.

Yeah, no more dead presidents! Only living ones. Bush and Obama!
Haha.. Of course I'm joking. I'm not familiar with Balto, but who doesn't love dogs.
