I went to the Whitman Coin & Collectibles Expo in Atlanta today. There was a huge selection of coins & notes, lots of things I had only seen on the net or in books. In general, the dealers were friendly & the selection couldn't have been better. I went with about $700, & fully intended to spend it all. In fact, I had been waiting impatiently for this show for about 3 months.

I can already hear the chant...."Pictures, Pictures, Pictures". Well, except for a lone Mercury dime, an XF with a hint of rainbow toning on the obverse, I came away empty handed. There was a lot of buying/selling going on, most of it between the dealers with the booths & the dealers walking around carrying briefcases & boxes, or dragging carry-on luggage. From what I overheard prices were all based on greysheet bid/ask prices.

Everthing I asked about I was quoted prices that were way above greysheet. Now, I understand that people have to make a living, & that they have expenses, but the markups were ridiculous. I was being quoted prices for raw coins that rivaled what I could buy PCGS slabs for on ebay.

I asked one guy how his prices related to the greysheet. He said he had to make a living, & wanted 15% above ask. Then he shows me the greysheet for the coin I am interested in, & proceeds to quote a price of 65% above the ask. I guess I should have the big red MORON tatoo on my forehead removed.

well maybe that is the answer.... you can buy pcgs slabbed coins on ebay and sell them to the dealers and make a profit

I may have run into you! I thought the prices were a bit high and I didn't get anything either. However, I was only looking for a few key dates. When I go to big shows I force myself to make a list before hand and stick to it. In the past I have regretted losing focus and buying a bunch of stuff that didn't "fit" into what I was collecting. They may have been good buys but I try to stick to a coin-budget and I had to pass up some stuff at the local coin shop that I really wanted but couldn't justify per my budget.

I wasn't trying to sell anything, but am pretty sure if I was that the prices offered would have been below greysheet. The point I was trying to make was that there seemed to be two levels of pricing, one for dealers & one for others. I'm a hardcore capitalist at heart, so I don't have a problem with people selling at whatever price they like. I also understand that there are differences in wholesale & retail prices, & that people need to make a living. However, that doesn't mean I'm going to buy at retail plus 50%.

To be fair, I didn't price everything, just coins I was interested in. Also, I did see several common date, slabbed, gold coins that were priced at a reasonable premium over melt. I don't know if those prices were left over from before the recent rise in gold bullion.
