This is the same VLDS 1917-D I had inquired about earlier on in the week. Except this time when I flipped the coin over the light hit it the right way. To me it looks like a slight brockage...it seems identical to wear Lincolns head/shoulder area are.

I've seen people post those overlay images before. Can someone do this with this Wheat cent of mine please?

Hard to say what's going on here except a very late die state for sure. Cool

Could it be 'ghosting' as seen on many British George V pennies of 1911-27? The obverse head was in very high relief and the reverse often shows a faint outline of the king's head around Britannia.

Not a brockage, just Progressive Indirect Design Transfer(PIDT) which is simply just another manifestation of die wear.

Its a form of "ghosting" that is common with early brach mint LWCs. Either the dies were worn or they were spread too far apart, there are alot of reasons.
Whew, I guess reading the entire RedBook Guide to Lincoln Cents cover to cover really paid off!

They happen on wheats and Memorials.

But they are usually on later die state coins.

Thanks everyone! Being on this site and learning more and more by the day is awesome. Appreciate everyone's help and comments. Those pictues are exactly what I was talking about with those overlays. Is there a website out this with those or someone around here puts them together?

Sure is interesting. Very cool. Nice example of this kind of die stage.

Yep, the proper term is Progressive Indirect Design Transfer(PIDT), the common slang term is "ghosting".

Also very well known on 3 cent silvers, especially the 1852s where they minted 18m from only a few hundred dies.
