Quote: The new Lincoln cents are ugly... I like the shield design. What I do not like is the low relief, but that could be said for all of the Zincolns made in the last twenty years or so.

I'd like a symbol of American culture, like say a Cylon!

You'll have to put me down for "I don't care". If they change it, it will be just as cheesy and low relief as the rest of the moderns. I'm not dogging on modern collectors (I collect a few) but it just seems like when they do a redesign it comes out looking goofy IMO. I'm old school. The penny is a joke. The statehood and ATB Quarters are unimpressive to me. Large cents, silver dollars, silver half dollars etc. is real money. It's hard to get excited about anything new. I just sounded like a grumpy old man. I guess that's what I am. Haha!

While I agree that the classic coin designs are much more attractive and artistically valid than our current designs, I don't think we should simply recycle old designs. To me, it's a rip-off. Plus, some of the designs were a product of their times and would be inappopriate. For example, the Peace dollar commemorated the end of WWI, so it doesn't make much sense to use it again. What the mint really needs to do is to hire some top-notch artists and sculptors to create some new, unique designs that both honor our country and have an artistic merit all their own. The last good new designs we had, I think, were the bicentennial quarter and dollar reverses.

Yes we need a redesign. I ordered a new 1900's & 2000's modern type set album several months ago and finally opened it up this weekend to see what coins I may have on hand and there are only 4 slots for dimes. Less than any other coin. Fewer redesigns make for boring type sets

@jpsned I think they should actually roll out some new halves for circulation, and freshen them up to appeal more to normal people.

Each coin should be totally redesigned every 6 years, front and back.
Start with a new cent next year, then a new nickel the year after, etc.

I don't know about that, the designs would get super cheesy after the first 5 years... i.e. the Presidential dollars

In another thread I suggested that the obverse of all 6 coins be a representation of Lady Liberty with the reverse being a different symbol of Liberty or the nation, such as the Liberty Bell, flag, US Capitol etc. The reverse designs can rotate through the coins like a volleyball team so that they get repeated every 6th year on a denomination.
Add to that the elimination of value names like "Dime", Quarter Dollar" etc. and have the actual value in cents shown (10 Cents, 25 Cents...) instead.
This would at once provide a continuity as well as variety in designs over the years, not only for the dime but for other coins as well. It also eliminates the politics from coin designs, which will rear its ugly head with any real person depicted, Reagen, Roosevelt or otherwise.
