NGC - NGC's popular black Retro Holder will be available for select US coins from October 1 to December 31 while supplies last.

Starting October 1, 2015, NGC will again offer its popular black Retro Holder and black label for the following US coins: Silver Eagles, Gold Eagles, Gold Buffaloes, Presidential dollars, Sacagawea dollars as well as all common date Morgan dollars and Peace dollars.

The black Retro Holder is reminiscent of NGC's first coin holder, introduced in 1987 and used for only a few months.

Quantities of the Retro Holder are limited for each coin type and are available only while quantities last. Check this article posted on the NGC website before sending an order as we will post when a particular coin is no longer eligible.

Submissions must be received by NGC between October 1 and December 31, 2015. The program ends on or before December 31, 2015 based on availability.

Can reholder orders be mixed with new submissions? Couldn't get a clear answer on this from NGC.

I've called them 3 times for questions. This is a very confusing offering. For instance, my 1921s, while being a common year, is a rare Thornhead VAM so it's not eligible. Error coins are however

Will they take the high relief liberties I wonder. Should email them tomorrow and ask (I sent mine out today before I got notice, so hopefully they'll let me add it if they'll put the HRR's in them since it should get there after 10/01)

Personally I don't like the look.
BUT
They would certainly have a least one significant plus.
Imaging NGC slabs that have the white insert is a problem that takes a while to solve.
The black inserts would significantly cut down on reflected light.

That is a good question as to why they will only allow common date Morgans and Peace dollars. My first thought was hat maybe the "retro" inserts aren't as inert as the white inserts and would be more likely to react with the silver alloy. But if that was the case I can't see allowing them for ASE's or the small size dollars.

Ya, I'm surprised they said no to my 21s thornhead and glad I had the foresight to ask. All it says on the site is common date only and if a 21 morgan isn't a common date I don't know what is.

What are they saYing on the ngc forum conder?

It is but the VAM on mine is a very popular and rare one with a high premium attached over a normal 21. So, while they say common years only obviously there's more to it. I hope conder can use his contacts to see what's going on.
