Mila, there's a nice catalog over at JandM.com of all the Canadian coins. I think it lists many of the $1 commemoratives.

Here it is !

I at first thought it was in a plastic holder but going back I made a mistake and it wasn't.
The price paid is shown on the sticker.

Yeah, I wish it was.
When I first saw it I asked the clerk what was the price and he said 1960 I thought he meant $19.60
He was telling me the year date instead, I misunderstood.

Went back this morning and saw the price was $35.00
BUT I REALLY wanted it so....here it is!

He had a 1969 for $45.00 but unfortunately I couldn't swing that one.

Ah...that's still a good price!
It looks like the cellophane is peeling away, which was a common complaint with the early PL sets.
You might want to put something around that to inhibit patina. As my sets are all in pliofilm, what have other collectors used to protect these sets?

Did you mean 1959 was $45.00 1969 sets can be got for less than 5 dollars. All the commemorative silver dollars are shown in this thread. Canadian silver dollars were minted between 1935 and 1967 except 1940 to 1944 when they were suspended because of the war.

If you're looking at buying Candaian dollars, I think the mint sets are the way to go. I picked up a 1965 and 1960 mint set on Sunday at the coin show. They were $18 each. For about the cost of the dollar and the half dollar, you can pick up all 6 coins. I've only been able to find them back to the early 1960s though.

All of the circulating commemoratives are shown in this thread, but there are a bunch of NCLT dollars that look very nice. Check ebay or a coin show, they really are pretty coins.

I have recently aquired a book called "The Standard Catalogue of Canadian Uncirculated Sets". It shows the value of the 1960 set "Complete Text/Blue Ink" at $70.00.

Mila, How come you never told me about this:

"I've never seen one of these and I do like BIG."

Is it just Dollars or all BIG coins? Like maybe GB Crowns?

Hi Nancy,

I've never seen or held a GB Crown (in person) so I have no idea
how large they are. So no, not just dollar just BIG.

cpaul, you may be correct. I was so excited when I saw the '60
could have read it wrong I also didn't have my reading glasses with me.
But it doesn't matter now, I wouldn't have been able to get that one also.
There will be a next time.

Thanks,

Mila, GB crowns are approx 38mm x 3mm. Roughly the size of an Eisenhower $1, may be a bit thicker though. My kitchen scales say it weighs 28 grams, but they only go in 2 gr increments, so may be a bit of leeway there. BIG enough?

Mila,

The Canadian silver dollar was the first coin I really loved as a coin collector. This was back in the late 50's and early 60's. I bought several in BU with every bi-weekly paycheck. And, they weren't expensive.

I think I have nearly a complete set. I like the "average" ones, but also liked the totem pole, the Parliament Building, and the ship.

Nice, nice, big solid coins. Wish they were still being minted.
